Conversation: Ethical Design and Technology

In recent years, multiple examples of technologies have demonstrated that the common belief that technology is neutral is incorrect. The human bias will inevitably present when creating technologies. Consequently, bias towards gender, race, age, social status etc. are embedded in technologies of varying forms from park benches to webcams to risk assessment software tools in justice systems. Naturally, this is discriminating towards the subjects of the bias and also creates serious ethical complications for the bigger societal structures that these technologies are a part of.

While ethics can be difficult to grasp in practice, it is important to gather an understanding of its importance when developing new technologies and when using technologies in our everyday lives in order to ensure that they are as harmless as possible.

Join us on the 20th of April where we have invited Brit Ross Winthereik, professor at the IT University of Copenhagen, and Christina Melander, Program Director at Danish Design Center, for a conversation on how to detect ethical flaws in technology and how to create ethical technology and design.
