About Trevor

The Trevor Project is the world’s largest suicide prevention and crisis intervention organization for LGBTQ young people. We are a non-profit that provides 24/7 life-saving support via phone, text, and chat. We also operate the world’s largest safe space social networking site for LGBTQ youth and run innovative research, education, and advocacy programs. We’ve been saving lives every day for over 20 years.

Overview of the role

The Software Engineering Manager will oversee, grow, and develop a fully-functional team of on- and-offshore software engineers as they work to deliver high quality, scalable, and maintainable software solutions. In collaboration with our quality assurance and product teams, this person will help transform a product vision into technical requirements and then guide their team in building robust and reliable applications that will be used to help save the lives of LGBTQ young people.

Who you are

  • Experienced. You have 5+ years of web software engineering experience and at least 1-2 years of experience as either a Senior Software Engineer or Engineering Manager working on high-performing teams.
  • Tech Savvy. You have a deep knowledge of modern web application architectures, Javascript/NodeJS, Typescript, React/Vue, software engineering principles, serverless/cloud functions, unit testing, and cloud services (GCP and/or AWS).
  • Grounded in Best Practice. You understand and prize unit testing, strict coding standards, deep PR reviews, and SOLID principles.
  • Role Model and Leader. You are a dedicated mentor and compassionate leader for your staff and colleagues alike. You have experience managing people and tasks, and you inspire others to do their best work.
  • Innovative. You stay up-to-date on the latest techniques in software engineering, but always approach the problem-solving process with practical, simple, and proven methods.
  • Collaborative. You understand that the best way to meet and exceed goals is through outstanding teamwork.
  • Agile. You are comfortable navigating ambiguity and working with competing priorities. You maintain composure and remain positive under pressure.
  • Builder. You’re someone who thinks strategically. You’re excited about the opportunity to take the status quo as just a starting point, then implement best practices and continually innovate.
  • Detail-Oriented. You are aware that paying attention to small details can have a huge impact on the organization and you take steps to make sure your work is thorough and complete.
  • Passionate. You care about LGBTQ youth. You care about saving lives. You want to come to work and feel inspired every day. You want to change the world.
  • Fun. The work we do is very serious, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have fun. We know how to have a good time and you should too.

What you’ll do

  • Lead a software engineering team to deliver high-quality software applications
  • Be a champion for guiding engineers in coding best-practices including quality, testability, reusability, architecture, and performance
  • Work closely with product and quality assurance managers to help scope out work, timelines, and test plans, and to implement a seamless SDLC
  • Work closely with the Director of Software Engineering to help formulate overall strategies and policies for the engineering team as well as collaborators and stakeholders
  • Spend approximately 30% of your time involved  in hands-on development, PR reviews, debugging, and software/cloud architecture implementation
  • Select, develop, nurture, retain, and grow a diverse and high-performing team of software engineers

Benefits

  • Generous vacation and holidays (like a full day off to celebrate Harvey Milk Day!), including three half-day Fridays during the summer
  • Comprehensive health insurance (we pay 100% of your premiums for medical, dental, and life), including gender affirmation surgery
  • Flexibility to work from anywhere in the U.S. (we provide the technology, a monthly internet stipend and reimbursement to outfit your work-from-home space!)
  • Fun virtual office environment and passionate team
  • Online Subscription to Headspace, a digital meditation platform
  • Meaningful work at an organization that is saving the lives of LGBTQ young people across America every day
  • The Trevor Project is an equal opportunity employer
