Company overview

Mission-driven LanzaTech is a revolutionary solution to climate change, capturing pollution to clean our skies and oceans and create new high value products for a sustainable future. LanzaTech captures pollution to make fuels and chemicals, including sustainable jet fuel and products you use every day. The technology is like retrofitting a brewery onto an emission source like a steel mill or a landfill site, but instead of using sugars and yeast to make beer, pollution is converted by biology to fuels and chemicals! Imagine a day when your plane is powered by recycled emissions, when your yoga pants started life as pollution from a steel mill. This future is possible using LanzaTech technology.

About the role

We have an exciting new opportunity for a data scientist to join the growing AI and Modelling (AiM) group at LanzaTech.

LanzaTech has unique datasets, growing data infrastructure, and the opportunity for you to use these to help solve one of the world’s biggest challenges. You will use your data science and communication skills to answer questions, solve problems and drive decision making at LanzaTech.

The AiM group uses artificial intelligence and computational modelling to design and control LanzaTech’s carbon-recycling microbes. They also tackle other important projects at LanzaTech. Colleagues in the group include scientists and software/machine learning/data engineers. The group owns the full stack from research to deployment, and you will collaborate closely with all these roles to deliver data products.

In this role, you will mostly work with biology, chemistry and industrial fermentation data. A background in biology, chemistry or engineering is nice to have, but is not a requirement, as you will quickly gain domain knowledge in the role.

This is a remote work position with monthly on-site meetings in Auckland. You must have the right to work in New Zealand.

Key duties

  • Use data science to deliver actionable insights to engineering, science and business teams
  • Generate hypotheses and design experiments
  • Create interactive data visualisations and dashboards
  • Design, implement and evaluate machine learning models and other algorithms
  • Work with engineers to deploy models to production and monitor the performance of these models
  • Work with developers to develop data products as web applications
  • Write well-structured, documented, and tested code in Python
  • Document methods and results in Jupyter notebooks
  • Communicate insight and recommendations to technical and non-technical audiences in meetings, scientific reports and talks

Required skills

We are looking for candidates who have:

  • A PhD or Masters qualification in a relevant field (e.g. Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Engineering), or equivalent experience
  • At least 2 years of experience in a data analyst, data scientist or equivalent role
  • Theoretical and practical knowledge of statistics
  • Intermediate Python coding ability
  • Strong data visualization and communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and excellent attention to detail
  • The ability to be proactive and take ownership of their work

Nice to have experience

We are especially excited about candidates who have experience with:

  • Biological, fermentation, or time series data
  • Deep learning and reinforcement learning
  • TensorFlow, PyTorch or JAX
  • AWS or Google Cloud Platform
