About the Role

Front-end engineering at Actual encompasses two primary challenges:

  1. Building elegant and responsive interfaces with React and TypeScript

  2. Researching and developing new ways of presenting those interfaces in beautiful 3D environments

Accomplishing these goals is not easy; it is very much an active R&D enterprise that aims to go well beyond the patterns of the typical web stack. We regard UX to be a fundamental pillar of the platform, and we invest in the heavy lifting that is needed to be not just good but outstandingly great. Accordingly, we value individuals who combine enterprise-level rigor, strong technical creativity, and a passion for thinking through the many tiny details that go into creating a peerless user experience.

What You’ll Achieve

  • You will make a direct impact on complex sustainability transformations across the globe. Our customers aren’t passively consuming data dashboards; they are using Actual to reimagine complex real-world infrastructure that has a material impact on climate.

  • You will enrich and learn from a cross-functional team of stellar, highly collaborative coworkers, all of whom share a deep commitment to driving real-world change.

  • You will build truly first-of-its-kind software that pushes the limits of computing, graphics, and UX on the web.

  • You will help to enrich, grow, and maintain a culture of optimism, inclusion, and resilience.

  • You will customize your growth as an engineer and technical leader with numerous opportunities to take on greater responsibility and to cross-train in domains like product, customer development, and design.

The Skills You’ll Need

  • Deep experience building complex, production-level web applications with React and TypeScript. A sharp eye for performance tuning and optimization is also a plus.

  • A discerning eye for UX, with a clear history of working to understand and build for the user in prior work.

  • A strong demonstrated passion for building interactive 2D or 3D graphical environments, either on the web or in a native context.

  • Keen desire to challenge the technical gap that exists between the rich environments and detailed interaction of modern games and the web.

  • The ability to jump in and make progress on different levels of the web stack as needed. You absolutely do not need to be an expert at everything, but you should be comfortable with continuous learning and extending beyond your core domain.

Our Tech Stack

Our front-end technology stack includes:

  • React and TypeScript

  • A variety of map and geodata visualization frameworks

  • GraphQL

  • Connections to backend technologies including Node, Python, Rust, Google Cloud Platform, and Gitlab CI/CD

In addition to these foundational components, we also experiment actively with a variety of 3D rendering technologies including ThreeJS, Unreal, and more.

Benefits & Perks

  • 100% remote-first culture (must be based in the US)

  • Flexible paid time off along with sick days as you need them

  • 12 weeks of paid parental/bonding leave for all parents (birthing, non-birthing, and adoptive), available for use any time within two years of birth/adoption

  • Meaningful early-stage equity

  • Fully-paid platinum-level health plans including spousal and dependent coverage, effective immediately on your start date

  • Support for your future with life insurance and 401(k) retirement options

  • A professional development budget of $2,000 per year to sharpen your skills

  • A $3,000 new-hire home office budget to help you get set up with everything you need to work effectively, plus annual $1,000 refreshers to stay topped up

  • Company-paid internet up to  $150 per month

  • The option to change up your routine with company-paid access to local co-working space, up to $600 per month

  • And more…

Our Hiring Process

We have a human-centered hiring process that is designed to get to know you as a fully-rounded individual. We are also very mindful of the investment of time and energy that applying represents and paying candidates for the technical evaluation portion of our process. Our interviews take place via Zoom.

Diversity and Inclusion

Stellar candidates can come from many different backgrounds, and our team is an excellent reflection of this fact!  If you think you have what it takes to succeed in this role we highly encourage you to submit your resume for consideration, even if you don’t think you satisfy every suggested checkbox. Passion, purpose, and tenacity count for a lot; if you resonate deeply with our mission and approach, we want to hear from you.

The solutions to climate inequities require an inclusive perspective, one that encompasses the full kaleidoscope of race and identity. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. People who identify as Black, Indigenous, person of color, female, non-binary, trans, gender non-conforming, or any other identity that is typically underrepresented in startups are highly encouraged to apply.

Please let us know at [email protected], if you require any special requirements for your interview and we’ll do our best to accommodate.
