OVERVIEW OF ROLE
We are looking for an experienced Staff Software Engineer to join our engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for leading complex technical projects, mentoring junior engineers, and helping to set the overall technical direction for the engineering organization.
SAMPLE PROJECTS
-
Your first goal will be to hop onto existing in-flight projects, ramp up quickly, and lend firepower to help drive them to completion. To start, you will have the highest leverage on our newest product, Family Finding, which helps identify extended family or friends who can help a child entering foster care. You will work closely with the Product Manager and team to design and build product capabilities that will rapidly generate product-market fit for the product’s first customers.
-
You will also ensure that Family Finding is interoperable with Binti’s other products, both by making improvements to our overall data architecture and by supporting others across the team in following architectural best practices.
-
You will participate in setting overall technical vision and standards for the engineering team. You can also influence technology choices and technical direction for new product development.
-
You will proactively identify areas for improvement in architecture, code quality, testing, and processes. You are also encouraged to provide guidance to junior engineers working on new product initiatives.
FLEXIBILITY
We offer flexible scheduling for all team members, though note that the majority of our team is in the Pacific time zone and we expect that a Staff Engineer will collaborate directly with other members of the team in real time.
LOCATION
This role is open to fully remote candidates who are authorized to work within the United States. If candidates are in the San Francisco Bay Area, we have an office in Oakland and you would have the option to work from the office.
WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT YOU
-
7+ years of experience in software development.
-
Experience with a complex codebase and a track record of success in product development.
-
A can-do attitude and cleanup mindset. When presented with a gnarly part of the codebase, you delight in figuring out what can be deleted or simplified.
-
Excellent project management and communication skills to deliver incremental value and to help stakeholders understand the current state of the project.
-
Ability and interest to communicate technical topics to non-engineers, especially helping them understand what has or will be unlocked and how additional resources might help us achieve our business goals, and curiosity to learn about those goals and product considerations.
-
Empathy and patience for your fellow engineers. Knowledge of techniques to get the whole team to help with deprecations and migrations rather than undo progress.
-
Ruby on Rails experience is a plus, but more important is the curiosity to learn and leverage the internals of our stack, experience with adding guardrails to highly flexible and prototype-oriented languages and frameworks, and/or a track record of making successful strategic decisions to change tech stacks.
