Role Description:

Surgo is looking for an exceptional, creative, and highly motivated Data Visualization Designer who is passionate about telling compelling visual stories about health and global development. The perfect candidate will have extensive knowledge about core graphic design technologies and an ability to synthesize complex concepts and translate them into clean and simple visuals.

As Data Visualization Designer, your responsibilities will include:

  • Conceptualizing, designing, and building engaging information graphics and data visualizations that advance organizational priorities and tell the story of Surgo’s work

  • Helping translate research insights to multiple audiences, using graphics and laypersons’ language

  • Collating and analyzing large data sets and dashboard findings to help extract and communicate the “so what?” for a variety of audiences

  • Writing copy laying out data-driven findings

  • Researching and creating storyboards and comps as part of the design exploration process

  • Producing a variety of design assets in support of Surgo’s priority audiences (Board of Directors, partner organizations, media, donors, policymakers, and health, social impact, technology, and global development organizations)

  • Working closely with the Director of Communications and collaborating often with other Surgo team members

The essentials:

  • Bachelor’s degree plus a minimum of 4 years in a data analytics/visualization role, ideally with some familiarity to the global development sector

  • Strong portfolio showcasing storytelling via data, presentation design skills and a clean design aesthetic.

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of file formats, optimizing media and creating presentations across a broad range of delivery platforms (print, laptop, mobile, etc.)

  • Excellent communication (written, verbal and visual presentation) skills

  • Collaborative team player who can work effectively in a matrixed, “start-up like environment”

  • A focused project manager who can set and meet deadlines and multitask, while ensuring timely, high-quality work and open communications

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic and fast-moving environment

  • Passion for health, global development, and tech

The extras:

  • Knowledge of data science languages (i.e., Python, R)

  • Experience with VR, 3D, illustration or anything else that can help tell bold visual stories

  • Web development experience a plus (i.e., HTML, CSS, JavaScript)

Location: Washington, DC, USA (We are currently remote due to COVID-19. Our team generally operates from our DC office. We are open to the possibility that this role could continue to operate remotely post-pandemic).

Compensation: Competitive compensation and benefits package

Travel: Occasional international and domestic travel
