Senior Product Manager, Story
Atlantic Media · Washington, DC/New York, NYProduct Arts & Culture Posted 4 weeks ago
The Atlantic has, for more than 160 years, advanced ideas that matter and sparked global conversation on the most important issues of our time. We aim to bring clarity and original thinking to questions of consequence, on topics ranging from politics, the economy, and global affairs to technology, science, and culture. As the third-longest-running magazine in America, we find ourselves at a remarkable moment: one of both continuation and transformation, of upholding our legacy while continuously reinventing ourselves for the future.
The Atlantic is seeking a senior product manager to lead a team of editors, engineers, and designers who are reimagining the experience of our most fundamental product: the story.
As the product owner of Story, you will have end-to-end responsibility for the story experience, from authoring tools and templates to reader-facing touchpoints. That responsibility begins with the workhorse of the article template—which reaches tens of millions of Atlantic readers worldwide every month—and will extend to entirely new story forms you will help us imagine and build.
Additionally, you will partner with editors in the newsroom to help develop and support special projects—the big, ambitious stories that break the traditional bounds of the article template.
You will work closely with journalists to translate editorial needs into flexible and expressive tools; with researchers and designers to translate reader needs into beautiful and usable experiences; with engineers to ensure we write high-quality software; and with business partners to identify new ways to fund our journalism.
Your role as a product leader includes a commitment to helping us build a culture of cross-functional collaboration and trust. We believe that shared goals matter more than reporting lines, and that the best work happens when people from multiple backgrounds gather around common problems. We expect you to lead by example.
Qualifications and requirements:
Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams in newsrooms or news organizations
A high degree of empathy and a gift for listening—to internal partners and to users
A talent for navigating editorial, engineering, design, and business conversations
A gift for telling stories that inform and inspire people
An entrepreneurial and inventive approach to solving problems
An obsession with the details of user experience
An abiding appreciation for the value of great journalism
A lifelong love of learning
This position will be based in Washington, D.C., or New York City.
