Background: The Center for Open Science (COS) is a mission-driven non-profit technology company providing free and open services to increase inclusivity and transparency of research. COS is seeking a Data Manager to be the operational lead for its role in a recently funded John Templeton Foundation project.  This project will collect survey data on the social, spiritual, and religious attitudes from approximately 300,000 research participants around the world over a period of five years. The Data Manager will be responsible for the curation, ethical sharing, and preservation of the data, which will be collected by partner organizations. The Data Manager will be responsible for assisting external researchers on data reuse and requests for data access after external researchers meet criteria for ethical (e.g. IRB certification) and rigorous/transparent (e.g. preregistered designs) standards.  The Data Manager will be the point-of-contact with the lead teams for the project at Baylor, Harvard, and Gallup and will report to the Program Manager on the Policy team at the Center for Open Science. 

The Data Manager will

    • Receive the datasets and codebooks.
    • Prepare them for public release.
    • Manage and document the OSF project spaces hosting the data.
    • Implement the release schedule.
    • Provide daily support to researchers using the datasets.
    • Provide support for preregistration and Registered Report submissions associated with the project.
    • Manage communications in conjunction with the communications coordinator.
    • Conduct workshops and webinars for researchers on open and reproducible best practices, use of OSF, and workflows for this project such as the registry and reporting workflow
    • Maintain proper documentation for external community members

Additional Data Management Skills that May Be Applied

    • Maintaining and documenting that database for quality and wide use
    • Enhancing the dataset with related data from a wide variety of scholarly databases using and developing automated techniques to keep the dataset up-to-date
    • Enhancing the dataset with data extracted from papers and/or provided by other collaborators or performing teams -- Creating automated workflows for data extraction from sources
    • Negotiating and collaborating with maintainers of other scholarly databases to align data for automated extraction and merging
    • Maintaining overall data integrity for project success
    • Maintaining permissions for data access


    • Expertise with data managing, data wrangling, data merging, and data documentation
    • Expertise with scholarly databases. Experience with data access via APIs is desired. 
    • Experience with programming skills for data extraction, merging, and creating automated, repeatable workflows with large databases (SQL experience is a plus)
    • Practical understanding of and experience with machine learning a plus
    • Demonstrated commitment to transparency, rigor, and reproducibility in research
    • Functional knowledge or experience with preregistration or Registered Reports.
    • Attention to detail and very strong documentation and workflow management skills
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and ability to work independently and in coordination with a team for advancing shared objectives on a very assertive timeline
    • Ability to prioritize, make decisions, problem-solve, and ask for help


    • This position may require up to 10% travel (up to 20% if located remote from Charlottesville).

Required Education and Experience

    • 3-5 years of experience handling research data intended for reuse or curation
    • A demonstrated record of open science practices, such as data sharing, preregistration, collaborative research endeavors requiring documentation or curation.

Preferred Education and Experience

    • Education or related experience equivalent to Master’s level in data science, statistics, or a closely related field.
Salary range $60,000 - $65,000 commensurate with experience. The position is located at the Center for Open Science in Charlottesville, Virginia. On site is desired but remote work will be considered.

401(k) with employer match. COS offers a matching contribution of 100% up to 3% of pay and another 50% up to 5% of pay (the full match will be 4% if participants elect to defer 5%)
