Job Summary

Nightingale Open Science, a nonprofit start-up embedded within the University of Chicago Booth’s Center for Artificial Intelligence, is seeking a full-time Elixir web developer. The Nightingale platform, currently in an early private alpha stage, is a hosted environment for computational researchers around in the world. Thanks to robust partnerships with a number of health systems, we are crafting clinically relevant de-identified datasets to be made available exclusively in the platform. Our application provides a minimalistic computing environment that allows researchers to create and manage their own computing resources, run training jobs, and pay for platform credits so that all data remains within the platform. The goal is to provide convenient, scalable, and reproducible computing for researchers and strong assurances of data protection for our partnering health systems.

The Elixir Software Engineer will join as Nightingale’s first engineer after the CTO and will lead the web app development effort. The platform is a monolith written in Elixir with Phoenix LiveView, leveraging AWS APIs and Docker containers to manage user-created infrastructure and model training jobs.



  • Works with a high degree of independence to develop, and provide support for, a SaaS application.
  • Collaborates with researchers, data engineers, and specialists in security, design, etc. to scope and plan features.
  • Participates in code reviews.
  • Writes internal and user-facing documentation.
  • Leads in the development of new systems, features, and tools. Solves unique and complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met.
  • Acts as a technical consultant and resource for faculty research, teaching, and/or administrative projects.
  • Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications


Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.




Preferred Qualifications



  • At least three years of full stack web application development experience.
  • At least one year of production experience with Phoenix.
  • Skillful with LiveView.
  • Familiarity with working in a remote environment.
  • Proficient in DevOps with Terraform, AWS, Kubernetes; data engineering; machine learning.
  • Working knowledge with user interface design focusing on human factors and usability.


Preferred Competencies

  • Work well in ambiguous situations and learn on the fly.
  • Solid analytical skills with the ability to assess complex problems and translate them into a functioning solution.
  • Advocate best practices in software design and demonstrate that you have used these practices in previous positions.
  • Work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, adjust priorities when necessary and consistently meet deadlines.
