About the Department
The Center for Translational Data Science (CTDS) at the University of Chicago is a research center pioneering the discipline of translational data science to advance biology, medicine, and environmental research. We architect ecosystems of large-scale commons of research data, computing resources, applications, tools, and services for the broader research community to use data at scale to pursue scientific inquiry and accelerate discovery. These growing data commons offer petabytes of rich research data to scientists across the world.
The job works independently to perform a variety of activities relating to software support and/or development. Analyzes, designs, develops, debugs, and modifies computer code for end user applications, beta general releases, and production support. Guides development and implementation of applications, web pages, and user-interfaces using a variety of software applications, techniques, and tools. Solves complex problems in administration, maintenance, integration, and troubleshooting of code and application ecosystem currently in production. This at-will position is wholly or partially funded by contractual grant funding which is renewed under provisions set by the grantor of the contract. Employment will be contingent upon the continued receipt of these grant funds and satisfactory job performance.
CTDS Cloud Operations is seeking an experienced Sr. DevOps Platform Engineer with a proven DevOps and Site Reliability Engineering practice. You will work within our team to practice DevOps and SecOps in a high performing cross functional software engineering organization, helping to shape our platform’s ease-of-use for our Software Engineers to interact with and build upon. Beyond support and project work, you will work on our team to help focus on automation, toolchains and performance/capacity tuning. You will help maintain our engineering teams’ thoughtful and collaborative approach while adhering to our strong engineering principles and values. We expect engineers to have a high degree of ownership and accountability and to be comfortable designing and implementing solutions that improve performance but also adhere to modern engineering practices. Likewise, you’ll use your experience in engineering, operations, IaC and teamwork to provide fidelity to our existing practices.
Responsible for design, enhancement, and implementation of complex, challenging, and top priority technical tasks and timely delivery of such tasks within DevOps workflows, meeting the required level of quality.
Organize and prioritize work while providing a level of transparency showing workload.
Responsible for a scope of significant size critical to the team’s success, including implementing automation that reduces toil, preventing outages leveraging DevOps Pillars, and providing thoughtful solutions within a cross functional software engineering organization.
Provide technical leadership and coaching, while advocating for and executing best practices to effectively mentor interns and less experienced team members.
Actively participate in the hiring process and provide fair and productive interview feedback.
Designs new systems, features, and tools. Solves complex problems and identifies opportunities for technical improvement and performance optimization. Reviews and tests code to ensure appropriate standards are met.
Utilizes technical knowledge of existing and emerging technologies, including public cloud offerings from Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Advanced degree in computer science, mathematics, statistics, engineering, or a relevant quantitative field.
Multiple years of experience working as an engineer in a software development organization.
Experience with DevOps toolchains.
Experience managing Amazon Web Services via API.
Experience using GitHub to the team’s advantage.
Experience delivering infrastructure via code
Experience developing a preferred functional scripting/coding language.
Ability to collaborate with team members to execute and deliver in a timely manner, while helping to define guidelines and best practices.
Ability to work autonomously while taking into account the actions of other team members.
Ability to communicate both synchronously or asynchronously, depending on the situation.
Ability to be self-aware and to take and provide constructive and helpful input and feedback on technical issues.
Ability to accept ambiguity when seeking clarity, negotiate complex decisions, present options and persuasively advocate for optimal technical solutions, internally and externally.
In-depth knowledge in most technical areas of major projects and the core DevOps technology scope.
Considered a Subject Matter Expert of most DevOps technology and solutions.
