Job Summary: Independently perform complex applications/web development for projects of large to very large size and complexity; typically work as part of a team to implement business solutions. Responsible for all aspects of application development cycle. Code advanced and complex software solutions.

Introduction: The Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society (BKC) seeks a generalist web applications developer, who will work as part of the Lumen Database platform team (https://cyber.harvard.edu/research/lumen). They will work to maintain the platform, and develop tools and performance enhancements to aid researchers and users to better use the platform. The web developer will also work on other BKC research and open-source software tools.

Core Duties:

  • Participate fully in software development life cycle
  • Implement and support technical solutions to deliver business requirements
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to improve services
  • Contribute ideas to coding best practices and new technologies
  • Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external clients
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and code of Conduct

Job Specific Responsibilities:

As a Software Developer, you will:

  • Lead efforts to code, deploy and test revisions and new functionality for Lumen platform
  • Collaborate closely with research team to scope future development to achieve longer-term project goals, plan for platform growth
  • Translate technical capabilities and requirements into non-technical terms for internal and external stakeholders
  • Work with other members of the BKC development team to iterate on bug-fixes, participate in code reviews for Lumen and other Center projects
  • Flexibly and creatively promote technical solutions within a dynamic community of world-class researchers, academics, and activists across multiple disciplines

Basic Qualifications: Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications:

We are looking for people who have:

  • Full life cycle development experience (technical design through implementation) using industry-standard frameworks (eg, Rails, Symfony, Django)
  • Experience with Ruby and HTML/JavaScript/CSS
  • Experience with relational DBs (mySQL, PostgreSQL), noSQL DBs (mongoDB) and/or search (Elasticsearch, SOLR)
  • A focus on engineering quality, simplicity and maintainability
  • Strong command of web standards and best practices
  • Experience with scaling and performance optimization at the storage and application layers

A typical day could include working with a research project to deploy and test the latest revision of a software suite; working toward completing a longer term, multi-step enhancement or bug fix; participating in a code review; researching new tools to support new features, performance, or scaling; or thinking of fun topics to research or to present for the weekly geek hour meeting.

Candidate should have a dedication to maintainable and well-crafted code; good communication skills; be adept at working with both non-technical and technical people; be able to take initiative and follow through with minimal supervision; be patient, curious, and persevering; be flexible and be able to prioritize and to manage multiple needs; and work well as part of a team and independently.
