Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Conservation, the GIS Analyst, Conservation will provide mapping and spatial analyses for National Audubon’s Alaska office. This position will contribute to a variety of projects from field conservation, scientific analyses, fundraising needs, membership outreach and support for grassroots partners and chapters.  This position will be a GIS resource for Audubon’s offices and work in collaboration with the science team at the National Audubon Society.  This position will also assist the state director with leadership, coordination and support for national  GIS staff, users, and partners.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct advanced spatial analysis and/or modeling for conservation planning in priority landscapes.
  • Develop cartographic materials for science, policy and litigation, network and grassroots engagement, community outreach, development, marketing and communications.
  • Organize and maintain geospatial data on landscapes, habitats, wildlife populations, development, and natural resources in priority areas of Alaska for each project.
  • Develop static and interactive communications materials based on core GIS products (e.g. interactive web-maps).
  • Create new tools to display and/or interact with GIS data and conservation priorities and provide technical support and training to other staff.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geographic Information Systems, landscape ecology, conservation or landscape planning, community mapping, natural resource management, resource conservation, wildlife biology, or related discipline and 3-5 years of applied GIS and science experience. Experience may be considered in lieu of education. 
  • Academic or experiential background with climate change science and application, bird conservation and planning, biodiversity conservation issues, which includes familiarity with federal (and state of Alaska if possible) environmental policies.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and the ability to synthesize and communicate technical and complex information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Expertise with ArcGIS (desktop and Online) including Spatial Analyst, Data Management, and Model Builder. Experience managing, processing, analyzing and editing large volumes of geospatial data (both vector and raster), and sharing it via ArcGIS Server (or similar).
  • Knowledge and experience using Google Geo products.
  • Familiarity with web-based map production and GIS skills, along with relevant programing languages such as Javascript, HTML, KML, CSS/Carto-CSS, and familiarity with using Google Maps API, Mapbox, CartoDB, and/or others.
  • Fluency with geometry-based analyses (joins, intersections, unions, spatial selection), attribute-based analyses ((queries, field calculator, managing multiple selections).
  • Knowledge of remote sensing and land cover change methods, technologies and data.
  • Interest in pursuing and developing new conservation ideas, tools, and programmatic direction. Adaptability and flexibility with organizational structures.
  • Experience and interest in project management. We are a growing team with a lot of excitement for new directions and are looking for an enthusiastic colleague with a strong conservation ethic to move into a long-term position with our team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other web-based products.
  • Occasional travel in/ out of state for projects and Audubon trainings required.
