Program Overview

The intern will work on a project currently in development called the Systems Change Lab. The Systems Change Lab aims to increase our understanding of progress made towards required transitions and trends across Earth’s and humanity’s vital systems in order to achieve net zero emissions and shift towards a “nature positive” path. The Systems Change Lab will include a platform that will track critical transformations across systems, and their drivers, to provide the first complete picture of progress towards necessary transitions side-by-side, informing adjustments in policy and practice. The Systems Change Lab is a joint project of the Global Commons Alliance, the largest coalition of scientific and conservation organizations, and Resource Watch (, an open source platform which compiles hundreds of visualized data sets from the world’s most reliable sources.

Internship Summary

You will join a team of highly motivated individuals, including members of WRI’s senior leadership, to support the development of the Systems Change Lab platform, and the management of Resource Watch.  You will be expected to learn quickly on the job and will gain experience with data collection and management, as well as coordination.

Internship Learning Outcomes

Data Collection and Processing:

  • Find, assess, and process tabular, vector, and raster data for Systems Change Lab 
  • Calculate relevant metrics from datasets -
  • Summarize datasets into global and/or national statistic

Coordination and Collaboration:

  • Coordinate with internal researchers to assess the most relevant datasets to use for a variety of indicators
  • Contact external data providers to set up data-sharing agreements
  • Collaborate with web developers on data formatting and storage practices

Internship Qualifications

Required Qualifications:  

  • Experience working with a wide variety of data formats, both tabular and geospatial
  • Experience managing data and organizing data structures
  • Ability to communicate about data to a wide variety of audiences (technical and non-technical) through both writing and data visualizations
  • Experience in environmental science and sustainable development  
  • A self-motivated learner with a willingness to take on new challenges as required 
  • Confidence to lead work with minimal input from a supervisor
  • Comfort working on an evolving project that may have shifting priorities
  • Highly organized and attentive to detail 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent quantitative skills and a high degree of comfort working with data and web technologies

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using Amazon Web Services S3 storage
  • Programming experience in Python and familiarity with Pandas
  • Experience with geospatial analysis, especially Google Earth Engine, QGIS, or ArcGIS

The pay range for this internship opportunity is between $15-18/hour, commensurate with qualifications.

Duration and Location  
• This is a full-time, six-month internship with flexible start and end dates based on the student’s availability and need for the project.
• This is a remote-based internship with the option to work out of the Washington D.C. office once it reopens.
• WRI will provide a laptop for the duration of your internship.
