The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) is the regional planning and intergovernmental coordination agency that focuses on issues critical to the region’s success, including growth and development, transportation, water resources, services for older adults and workforce solutions. ARC is dedicated to unifying the region’s collective resources to prepare the metropolitan area for a prosperous future. This is done through professional planning initiatives, the provision of objective information and the involvement of the community in collaborative partnerships. 

The Data Scientist, Principal will be responsible for performing complex big data analysis and identifying business trends and problems. This requires interpreting results from multiple sources using a variety of techniques, ranging from simple data aggregation via statistical analysis to complex data mining independently.  This individual will design, develop, and implement the most valuable business solutions for the organization.


  • Maintains and updates all ARC's data holdings;
  • Prepares big data, implements data models, and develops database to support the business solutions;
  • Processes and analyzes more than 4,000 data variables;
  • Provides statistical analysis and research support to a variety of projects;
  • Develops data visualizations using a variety of tools including GIS and Tableau;
  • Leads Research and Analytics work in data analysis, interpretation, and write up of analytical reports;
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support agency goals and objectives.


  • Knowledge of Census data and other federal datasets;
  • Knowledge and understanding of GIS;
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis software like Stata and SPSS
  • Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team;
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with all members of the project team;
  • Ability to manage and prioritize complex competing priorities;
  • Ability to establish priorities and organize work;
  • Ability to multi-task with attention to detail;

  • Principles, practices and methods of technology analysis and design;
  • Possess strong oral and verbal communication skills;
  • Proficient in using database systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint).


  • Master’s degree in data science and analytics, computer science/engineering, information technology or a related field
  • Four (4) years of professional relevant and progressively responsible experience related to data visualization and charts, data modeling; andproviding business decision insight from raw data, to devise information-driven decisions and successfully convey discoveries to external audiences 

An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above, unless otherwise subject to any other requirements set forth in law or regulation.


  • Proficient in utilizing statistical applications, R, STATA and SPSS
  • Proficient in data visualization software, GIS and Tableau
