AAMC (Association of American Medical Colleges) is a not-for-profit association dedicated to transforming health care through innovative medical education, cutting-edge patient care, and groundbreaking medical research.  IT Enterprise Applications plays a critical role in supporting AAMC’s mission through diversified workforce, modern architecture, and industry best practices.  In 2019, AAMC started a multi-year transformation of its large product portfolio into modern digital platforms while transitioning from on-premises to AWS cloud services.  The AAMC IT team strives to deliver innovative solutions and reliable service that enables amazing user experiences, impactful strategies, and new information insights for the AAMC community and staff. 

 

The Senior Director of Data Analytics, will lead major data analytics initiatives, information strategies and drive data awareness in the organization. Key responsibilities of this role are: 1. Working with IT Leadership and business partners to develop and manage data and influence information strategies.  2. Manage a team of data analytics staff and database professionals to help deliver products that meet business expectations  3. Support strategic modernization initiatives and manage the adoption of new data models, data technology, and information processes. 

 

Success in this role requires an innovative mind, a proven track record of delivering and maintaining data management platforms, rigorous analytical skills, solid hands-on analytics experience, a passion for data, and the ability to build strong relationships with business partners and IT counterparts. This role reports directly to the Chief Information Officer and will work closely with senior business leaders across the organization..    

 

How you will make an impact

 

Data Visioning, Information Strategy, and Planning

  • Core Areas of responsibility include: Data Development, Data Support, Data Platforms and Data Governance.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders in a way that supports the vision and sustains a culture that treats data as a corporate asset.
  • Analyze data to provide insight and business recommendations. Promote data analytics opportunities across the organization.
  • Support and assist in evolving the processes used to develop and enhance data use in the organization.
  • Collaborate with IT senior leaders and business product owners to develop data analytics roadmaps aligned with business needs and the modernization strategy.
  • Help product teams understand data interdependencies and the best use of data models.

 

Foundational Support

  • Participate in development initiatives to deliver quality products that meet customers’ expectations.
  • Work closely with business product managers and IT counterparts to ensure that technical features such as data integration, information management, data security issues are addressed. Govern the adoption of data management tools and processes to gain maximum benefit.
  • Lead the identification and assessing the value of new data sources and analytical techniques.
  • Accountable for long term ownership of data models developed and evolution of those data models.
  • Remain current on data analytics techniques and become familiar with state-of-the-art data management tools.
  • Present data models to decision-makers that maximizes knowledge transfer and bottom-line impact of modeling results.

 

Lead Team Collaboration and Employee Engagement

  • Manage a team of database professionals, information managers, and strategic sourcing partners to create an internal environment of teamwork, sharing, enthusiasm and mutual respect.
  • Establish a collaborative working environment between the data analytics team, other IT units and organizational data stewards.
  • Nurture and support a strong data management culture with technology, high quality implementations, self-motivated innovation and problem-solving.
  • Participate in talent management and strategic visioning processes in IT. 

 

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • Bachelors or master’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a similar analytical field
  • Minimum 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in complex IT organizations, with at least 5 years managing a team of database professionals
  • Experience developing data analytic engines that are performant in high volume consumer digital environments.
  • Hands on experience working with current relevant data management technologies such as Tableau, Spark, Informatica, Elastic Search, AWS EMR.
  • Experience managing major data analytics initiatives and organizational  information strategies
  • Working with large sourcing partners with development distributed between on-site and offshore locations
  • Subject matter expertise in data modeling techniques and experience executing change to core business processes through the innovative use of quantitative techniques.
  • Positive, enthusiastic attitude with great teamwork and interpersonal skills, reflecting the ability to interact across department groups and organizational teams.
  • Ability to work under pressure and solve problems using an analytical approach; decisive, fast moving; quick and constructive resolutions of conflicts; and a can-do attitude
  • Ability to articulate ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences through excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver results under difficult conditions, particularly when faced with complexity and ambiguity.
  • The ability to build effective relationships with internal partners and business teams.

 

If a bachelor’s degree is required, related work experience may be substituted in some positions. One year of college course work at an accredited institution is equivalent to one year of related work experience.
