About Us
We believe government at all levels can and should work well for all people. We use insights and ideas from real people to guide us to real solutions that break down barriers to meet community needs and improve government in meaningful ways.
Code for America works shoulder to shoulder with community organizations and government to build digital tools and services, change policies, and improve programs.
- Partnership - We partner with government and community organizations with access to the resources and digital talent that can meaningfully impact some of the world’s toughest societal challenges.
- Empowerment - We create change that empowers government and community organizations with the tools and skills to change people’s lives, especially those most in need.
- Transformation - We connect and convene people from inside and outside government, and from all over the world to inspire each other, share successes, learn, build, and transform government systems.
Perks and Benefits
Code for America is invested in the well-being of our employees. In addition to competitive salaries, we offer comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance with 100% premium coverage for employees. We also offer life and disability insurances, a 401K program with a 3% match, and a wide array of perks.
The environment at Code for America is designed to be supportive and flexible. Employees are required to take at least one mental health day per month and we offer free access to a suite of mental health apps. We also have specific resources for parents, caretakers, and pet owners. Every employee has access to a wide variety of professional development resources for continuous learning and growth, including a yearly $1,000 professional development budget.
Collaborative environment
Code for America is committed to building a team as diverse as the nation we serve. We’re made up of people-centered problem solvers: technologists, advocates, storytellers, and organizers from many different backgrounds and communities around the country. We merge the best parts of technology, nonprofit, and government—so our collaborative culture is constantly evolving with the ideas of each new member.
We strive to be inclusive—a place people can grow and freely share their ideas. For example, our product development teams use pair programming, daily stand-ups, blameless post mortems, and user research to ensure our teams are on track to do their best work. We come together to learn from each other at our lunchtime speaker series, our quarterly off-sites, and our Weekly Wins meetings. We also have a number of employee resource groups, including our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee, a monthly LGBTQIA meetup, our Earthtones group for BIPOC employees, a justice-themed book club, and more!
Office space
Welcome to our loft-style work space in San Francisco! We have an open floor plan and conference rooms so you can work solo or in a group. There are plenty of snacks and drinks to keep you fueled and a bike room for those who choose to cycle to work. Our space is fully accessible for people who use wheelchairs or require other disability accommodations. We work hard to ensure that our office space is comfortable, collaborative, and inclusive.
Flexible work
We work hard, but we also prioritize work-life balance. Our flexible schedules allow you to build working hours that fit your needs. We try to set meeting hours between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Pacific Time, have company-wide “No Meeting Thursdays,” and allow employees to block off time for childcare or caretaking responsibilities. We are a growing remote team and welcome applications from people outside the San Francisco Bay Area for most roles.
