AI and Principled Innovation: Digital Twins

As digital twin technologies gain momentum across higher education and beyond, how can we apply Principled Innovation to guide our decisions? This session explores the ethical considerations, current use cases, and institutional implications of digital twins as a form of emerging AI-driven technology. Participants will engage in dialogue around responsible adoption and what it means to evaluate technology through the lens of Principled Innovation.

Raise awareness of the ethical, institutional, and societal implications of digital twin technologies in higher education.

Promote critical thinking about how Principled Innovation can inform decisions related to emerging AI-driven systems.

Foster dialogue around responsible adoption and encourage cross-functional perspectives on trust, transparency, and design integrity.

This workshop will help attendees:

  • Define digital twins and identify their current and emerging applications in education, research, and enterprise contexts.
  • Describe institutional tools and processes such as the VITRA process that support responsible innovation and promote ethical, secure, and privacy-conscious emerging technology adoption.
  • Apply the framework of Principled Innovation to evaluate the affordances and constraints involved in the design and use of digital twins.
