Description

The STEM Faculty's Ask the Expert sessions are back for 2025!

What do an orthopaedic surgeon and a computer scientist have in common? More than you might expect! This talk will tell how a chance meeting began a decade-long collaboration, resulting in innovative technologies that improve healthcare and advance research in Human-Computer Interaction.

Professor Blaine Price from the STEM Faculty’s School of Computing and Communications, Dr Daniel Gooch also from the School of Computing and Communications, alongside Dr Oliver Pearce, Director of Trauma at Milton Keynes University Hospital, have worked together on a variety of projects which all aim to improve the quality of healthcare in the UK. During this talk, you'll hear about these inventions and the long-standing collaboration between the OU and MK Hospital.

Meet the experts:

Blaine Price

Professor Blaine Price is a computer scientist who spent his early career at The Open University developing the internet infrastructure that transformed the university from paper and post to online delivery. He co-founded the OU’s Digital Health Lab, and his research in privacy, self-quantification, and digital health resulted in millions of pounds of grant funding. He led projects as principal and co-investigator. In 2024, he was awarded the title of Emeritus Professor and left full-time academic research at the OU after 33 years to commercialise his work through HealthTech Un Limited.

Daniel Gooch

Dr Daniel Gooch is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing and Communications. He is principally a human-computer interaction researcher, designing and developing technology supporting peoples' daily lives. For the last 6 years, he has been working with Prof Pearce and Prof Price on the PainPad, focussing on analysing the data collected through the device.

Oliver Pearce

Professor Oliver Pearce is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon with over 15 years of experience … He has been the Director of Trauma at Milton Keynes University Hospital since and is the Vice Chair of Research. He is the UK lead for the Rapid Recovery Programme after hip and knee surgery and sits on the European Advisory Board. In 2014, he met Blaine after a TV appearance, and together, they began trying to solve clinical problems using technology. They developed and deployed the PainPad pain logging device, which was trialled in hospitals with hundreds of patients. They formed HealthTech Un Limited to commercialise their medical technology ideas. Together, they hold two device patents, while Oli holds two medical garment patents, one commercialised.
