Nonprofits across Canada often hold years of personal data about children and families, much of it no longer needed and increasingly difficult to manage responsibly. In this session, Christa Hill uses youth sport as a practical case study to show how organizations can reduce risk by collecting only the data they truly need, improving registration practices, and updating long-standing administrative processes.
Participants will learn how common data collection habits can create unnecessary exposure, why “just in case” databases are no longer sustainable, and how to build healthier data practices without major technical investment. Through practical examples, Christa will highlight small, actionable changes that nonprofits and community organizations can make right away.
This is not a technical session. It is a practical conversation for nonprofit leaders who want to strengthen data practices, reduce risk, and use technology in ways that reflect their values.
