Pie & AI is a series of DeepLearning.AI meetups independently hosted by community groups. This event is hosted by Helen Wong. Special thanks to their support!
We are building an innovative open source declarative feature engineering framework at Airbnb. AI/ML practitioners only need to write their declarative Python configs once, it will orchestrate the complex data pipelines to backfill training data quickly and serve the features in a high throughput and low latency manner with online offline consistency guaranteed. It will drastically improve the AI/ML feature development velocity and lower the operation burden as AI/ML practitioners don't have to maintain scattered feature definitions across environments and feature lineage is easier to track with the declarative Python configs.

Pengyu Hou, with over ten years of experience, helped build Airbnb's ML infrastructure and is a founding member of Chronon, Airbnb's open-source feature engineering framework. His passion is in solving complex distributed problems, adopting open source projects and building a community for Chronon.
Demo of the Scalable Python Solution(Chronon)
Impacts:
Currently, the project has been adopted by Airbnb, Stripe and Roku in production. Stripe builds their entire ML feature on top of Chronon [Stripe's blog post]. The project demonstrated its value to power complex industrial level AI/ML feature engineering. We are also closely working with several other companies for potential adoption and actively building the community. Roku will write a blog post sometime in this half to showcase their adoption journey.
Vision:
At Airbnb, we embrace open source project and would like contribute back to the community. Our vision is to empower AI/ML practitioners by providing a unified, open-source feature platform that seamlessly bridges the gap between online and offline data environments, enabling efficient and consistent feature serving. Chronon aims to enhance the productivity of AI/ML practitioners by simplifying the complexities of managing features, ensuring high performance and low latency, and fostering an ecosystem of collaboration and innovation within the data community.
