There will also be lightning talks to inspire & encourage girls aged 10 -14 to get involved in tech. Each participant can only book one workshop because they will run simultaneously.

You will be able to explore online coding activities, online robotics, 3D Design, electronics, and physical computing and to get some hands-on making time from the comfort of your home

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

IF YOU BOOK MORE THAN ONE TICKET PER PARTICIPANT, YOUR BOOKING WILL BE AUTOMATICALLY CANCELLED.

THE 4 WORKSHOPS BELOW WILL RUN SIMULTANEOUSLY - THEREFORE EACH PARTICIPANT SHOULD ONLY BOOK ONE WORKSHOP

Workshop #1: The Tilting Maze

IMPORTANT NOTE: For this workshop, Girls Into Coding (GIC)will send a kit to the participants prior to the session. GIC will provide a postage-paid envelope for the return of the kit once the event is over. Please note that this particular workshop will only be available to UK RESIDENTS.

Ptoinkk! Design and build your own tilting maze game. Code up trigger switches, coloured lights, scores, timers, and sounds. Then play! It's labyrinth meets pinball meets microbit meets coding!

Material needed: A computer (Windows or Mac, but not a tablet)

Experience: No experience is required Workshop #2: IoT Robot

IMPORTANT NOTE: For this robotics workshop, Girls Into Coding (GIC)will send a kit to the participants prior to the session. GIC will provide a postage-paid envelope for the return of the kit once the event is over. Please note that this particular workshop will only be available to UK RESIDENTS.

This is a super hands-on activity, building a robot buggy and connecting it up to its own on-board IoT (Internet of Things) device. You’ll be introduced to IoT as well as learning how to connect all of the robot’s different components and then code it to move. We’ll explore sending data from the robot’s on-board IoT module through the internet and how to display it on a live dashboard.

Workshop #3: Build a virtual environment & explore with your own built VR set!

Build a virtual environment using CoSpaces that can be explored with a VR headset.

You will build the environment which will be a maze and have objects that can be interacted with along the way. This will be achieved using the range of features in CoSpaces and coding blocks called CoBlocks to give objects characteristics.

Materials needed:

A computer with access to the internet and a mobile phone that can download the app CoSpaces; the VR kit & instruction sheet will be sent to the participants prior to the session.

Experience:

Basic working knowledge of block-based code would be beneficial but beginners are welcome! They will be guided by instruction sheets and a live tutorial.

Workshop #4: Exploring 3D Design

This is an exciting remote learning workshop for bright young minds where they get to compare and assess some of the best freely available 3D Design software.

Participants will quickly get up to speed on core skills, best practices, workflow process and required tasks to become a successful 3D Designer.

Participants will understand and use parametric modelling tools (shapes & measurements) and free form modelling tools (moulding & shaping digital clay).

If you have done this workshop before and you want to join again, you are welcome! We will make sure you work on new projects!

Materials needed:

  • Personal Notepad to take down important Notes, Sketches, and Observations.

  • Personal Laptop. (Please download and install all software on the list under 3D Design)

Cher Lowies - How UX is everywhere

Cher is a Lead Research and Insights Specialist at EPAM, where she works with global clients to establish UX functions and user-first design thinking across different platforms and industries.

Before moving into UX she gained extensive experience in the Clinical Trials field, spread across both commercial and healthcare industries. Including managing a multimillion-pound Quality of Life Digital Intervention trial. This resulted in a charge to the medical practice in Northwest Head and Neck Cancer clinics to become more patient lead during post-treatment consultations.

Antonia Simon - Coding and Beyond: The Need for Creativity in Tech World

Antonia is an Experience Consultant passionate about using culture as a tool to design resilient, meaningful technology solutions for the future.

Hailing from Hong Kong, Antonia has always had a curiosity for the invisible code we call culture. It was this curiosity that led her to study Cultural Anthropology and Computer Science at Georgetown University. Despite this unusual mix, this intersection highlighted how if you want to design a technology product that people will use, you need to understand people who will use the product first.

At Epam Continuum, Antonia has brought this lens to work with brands like Yamaha Motors Europe, WWF and Ford Credit. By using cultural insights to create innovative, meaningful experiences, she’s been able to apply her passion for sustainability, research, futurism, and storytelling to help market leaders define and design their future.
