About the Role

The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is seeking candidates for a temporary (no benefits) position of up to 6 months (initially 3 months, with the possibility of a 3 month extension based on performance), with NDI’s Democracy and Technology (DemTech) team. NDI’s DemTech team works around the globe with political experts in NDI’s 55+ field offices to design and support technology-enabled programs. Our work is focused at building a safe, open, democratic information space, giving citizens more voice in their governments and aiding governments in being more responsive to their people. This position would focus on supporting NDI's programs related to democracy and technology, including civic technology and human-centered design.

Your Purpose and Impact:

  • Assist in technology-powered project design, implementation, testing, documentation and evaluation.
  • Investigate and share new technologies relevant to civic and political groups.
  • Assist with the development of materials for and training on topics such as: emerging technology tools and approaches, participatory democracy tools, and parliamentary monitoring tools.
  • Assist with planning, logistics, and invitations for public events.
  • Monitor technology literature and media, including Twitter (X), and prepare newsletters and weekly news round-ups for the team blog.
  • Develop case studies on digital technology deployment for civic engagement.
  • Assist in writing easy-to-understand instructions and manuals for technology tools.
  • Coordinate administrative tasks such as travel authorizations and financial reconciliations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required with coursework in political science, international relations computer science, or a relevant subject. A combination of education and experience in lieu of a degree can be considered.
  • Curiosity about and passion for the impacts of digital technology on citizen’s lives.
  • Excellent event planning and organizational skills.
  • Excellent writing and speaking skills in both formal and informal styles.
  • Experience deploying or maintaining digital tools and platforms is a plus.
  • Political, campaign, legislative, international, or NGO experience is a plus.
  • Fluency in a language other than English is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail with experience prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with event planning and managing logistics is strongly desired
  • Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired

To be considered for a Temporary Project Assistant at NDI, you must have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Bachelor's degree is $17.00.  The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Master's degree is $18.00. 

*Please note – temporary hires at NDI are paid hourly, are classified as non-exempt, and are therefore eligible to receive overtime pay. Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits, including insurance and retirement plan benefits, and paid time off. Temporary employees of NDI-DC are not represented by the NDI Union. 

Additional Information:

While there may be flexibility for remote/hybrid work environment and to comply with tax and legal obligations, successful candidates must be residents of MD, DC, or VA, or relocate prior to the start of employment at NDI.
