Introduction

The civic designer is appointed by, and serves at the pleasure of, the Governor.

 

The civic designer will work as part of the Innovation Team to deploy design-based innovation approaches that support Maryland communities. The civic designer will support research, synthesis and framework development, idea generation, prototyping, and testing for the Innovation Team.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Annapolis and Baltimore City, MD

POSITION DUTIES

General Purpose: The civic designer will play a central role in deploying design-based innovation approaches to support the Innovation Team’s work to reduce child poverty in Maryland.

 

Responsibilities:
  • Guide Innovation Team colleagues, together with collaborators in government and in Maryland communities, through rigorous innovation processes, including research, synthesis and framework development, idea generation, prototyping, and testing 
  • Design, plan, and deliver qualitative design research 
  • Make research findings relevant and impactful through a variety of formats such as slide decks, stories, videos, experiences, exhibits, and design artifacts 
  • Employ best practices to create a seamless user experience for those within government and for communities across Maryland 
  • Develop templates, tools, and methods that government can use to improve service and program delivery 
  • Engage and collaborate with community organizations dedicated to strategies that promote economic mobility and reduce child poverty 
  • Plan and execute workshops with stakeholders 
  • Stay up to date with trends in civic design and public innovation and share best practices and cutting-edge research 
  • Prepare reports, summaries, presentations, visuals, recommendations, and other work products and present to government leaders, community members, and other partners 
  • Support the Innovation Team and other state government colleagues in agile ways of working
  • Other duties and projects as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience applying equity-centered design approaches to projects and workstreams  
  • Experience conducting user research and generating actionable next steps  
  • Experience working across government, nonprofit, and private sectors  
  • A customer service mindset and commitment to relationship-building within and beyond government  
  • A track record of demonstrating and successfully applying the following characteristics:
    • Excellent ability to simplify information and concepts, to formulate options and recommendations, and to communicate with all levels of management and workforce to achieve objectives
