Analytics Engineer: Open-source Transit Data Infrastructure

Overview
We're seeking an Analytics Engineer to join our growing practice building modern open-source data infrastructure for public transit agencies. In this role, you'll help transform complex transit operational data into clear, actionable insights through well-engineered data models and analytical solutions. You'll work at the intersection of software engineering and data analytics, creating reliable, maintainable, and scalable data transformations that power critical transit operations decisions.
This role is open to both full-time W2 employment and freelancers with full-time availability
What You'll Do
- Enable analysts to efficiently report key operational metrics like on-time vehicle performance
- Design and implement modular, reusable data models and transformations for transit agencies, modeled after our successful open-source work at Cal-ITP
- Write and optimize complex SQL queries to analyze transit operational data
- Collaborate with transit agencies to understand their analytical needs and data challenges
- Build and maintain data documentation and testing frameworks
- Partner with data analysts to enable self-service analytics
- Contribute to open-source data infrastructure projects
- Report to Jarvus’ lead data engineer and collaborate with Jarvus data and analytics engineers assigned to other projects to evolve a cohesive set of practices across transit and other data projects
- Help establish best practices for version control and code quality in analytics
What You Bring
- Comfort being client-facing in multi-stakeholder environments and representing both your team and technical considerations to mixed audiences
- Strong aptitude for writing and refactoring complex SQL queries and analytical views
- Experience working as a data analyst or as a partner with data analysts
- Well-versed in using Git and source control workflows to collaborate with team members
- Applied understanding of software engineering concepts like modularization, reusability, and code quality
- Strong communication skills and ability to work with cross-functional teams
Nice to Have
- Experience with dbt or DAG-based data orchestration
- Experience using Python to analyze data
- Experience using frontend development tools to build custom data visualizations
- Experience working with geographic or transportation data
- Familiarity with transit operations or public transportation systems
- Background in open source development
