Have you created a successful career in product design and want to do something good with your skills and experience? If yes, then join us in our mission to build open-source innovative technology solutions for impactful climate change mitigation.

Open Earth Foundation is a California-based nonprofit on a mission to create groundbreaking technology that helps combat the climate crisis.

We’re a diverse, global team working remotely and collaborating with partners worldwide to make real change possible.

With strong funding and a powerhouse team of innovators, we’re ready to tackle big challenges for a resilient Earth for generations to come and we need the planet’s brightest minds to help solve them!

Priority will be given to applications submitted by December 13th.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it:

As a Product Designer on our team, you will leverage your UX/UI expertise to design user-centric, accessible, and climate-focused products. You’ll work closely with passionate, cross-functional teams working to make a real difference in climate while growing your skills in an agile, fast-paced environment. You will help balance cutting-edge technology with a user-centered approach with our internal Product Design Team.

This position is remote and international as our organization goes across different time zones.

  • Schedule flexibility is expected with a willingness to collaborate in overlapping core hours for meetings from 8 am PST to 11 am PST (GMT-8).
  • Time zones in LATAM or availability to work in core LATAM working hours (GMT-3) are preferred.

The following requirements describe our ideal candidate. If you don't meet some of the requirements, you're encouraged to apply anyway.

The ideal candidate: passionate about collaborative technical climate solutions

  • Experience with user-centered methodologies, including user research, persona development, and journey mapping to create empathetic, impactful solutions for users.
  • Experience designing intuitive products, with a heavy emphasis on showing complex data in simple but stunning ways.
  • Experience using LLMs and AI-assisted code or no-code to prototype functional applications for fast testing and iteration.
  • Experience working with climate data and data visualization dashboards.
  • Experience with leveraging design for innovative open-source technology to develop accessible and climate-focused products or passion to do so.
  • Familiarity with HTML, CSS, or frontend frameworks to improve communication with developers and understand technical constraints. NOT for coding, but just for communicating with the technical team.

Responsibilities: understanding users, prototyping, high-fidelity designs

  • Use of UI/UX to create intuitive interfaces with a strong understanding of design principles.
  • Dive deep into user feedback and expressed needs to identify pain points to address and essential features to develop.
  • Plan, conduct, and analyze user research and usability tests, iterating on designs based on real user feedback.
  • Prototype, test and design new features, create wireframes and mockups, turning low-fidelity sketches and workflows to high-fidelity designs using tools like Figma.
  • Document product/design decision-making through diagrams and conceptual work (sitemaps, user journeys, user strategy templates).
  • Make data-informed decisions by analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data to validate designs and inform product improvements.
  • Support in the production of strategic materials and relevant design assets (reports, decks, papers, website graphics, etc.).

Interpersonal skills: a time-zone management master, clear communicator, creative and curious, attention to detail

  • Clear communicator with good verbal and written skills in English (additional languages a plus).
  • Strong skills in collaborating with cross-functional teams (developers, researchers, stakeholders) and effectively communicating design ideas and rationale.
  • Capacity to work with team members and partners at all levels and across time zones in a highly collaborative and remote environment.
  • Embraces new challenges, takes ownership and contributes to the team as a key player.

Qualifications:

  • Formal training or significant real-world experience in graphic design, industrial design, human-computer interaction, computer science or related areas.
  • A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible experience as a UX/UI or Product Designer.
  • Ideally startup, big tech, or open source and climate communities experience.

Compensation and benefits:

  • This position is full-time with compensation of $40,000 to $50,000 (USD) /year, commensurate with location and experience.
  • Open Earth offers a professional development budget, unlimited PTO, paid holidays and paid sick leave.
  • You will work remotely within a dynamic and international environment.
  • We celebrate our achievements during our in-person annual team retreat.

OEF is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer. We celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion in teams, and believe people should align their work with their purpose. Join us if you love Earth.

Please apply by submitting your resume, portfolio (or relevant work) AND a cover letter, it is your opportunity to highlight why you feel you would be a great addition to the team.

We look forward to hearing from you!
