About the job
At Skylight, DevOps engineers work with developers throughout the software development life cycle to ensure code can be reliably and repeatedly released on demand with a high degree of quality. They understand both software development and operations, with expertise in areas such as networking, security, test automation, and continuous integration/deployment.
In this role, you’ll support the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) as they modernize how critical government records are securely transferred, stored, and accessed. You’ll help manage and maintain cloud-based systems hosted in Microsoft Azure, ensuring they operate efficiently, securely, and reliably.
This work is essential to preserving and providing secure access to historical records, supporting NARA’s vital mission for generations to come.
What you’ll do
- Configure and manage Azure resources, including ExpressRoute, Virtual Networks, and Route Tables
- Manage user roles and permissions with Active Directory and Role-Based Access Control (RBAC)
- Monitor system performance, uptime, and health using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights
- Implement security controls with Azure Security Center, Network Security Groups (NSGs), and Azure Firewall to meet compliance standards
- Perform system administration for Linux and Windows Server environments, including patching and updates
- Set up and validate backup and recovery processes using Azure Backup
- Optimize resource usage and costs using Azure Cost Management and auto-scaling tools
- Document configurations, troubleshoot issues, and escalate unresolved concerns with Azure support as needed
- Collaborate with NARA staff and other stakeholders to resolve incidents and continuously improve system performance
- Stay informed on Azure updates and best practices to ensure platform reliability and efficiency
What we’re looking for
Minimum qualifications
- Experience managing Azure environments, including ExpressRoute, Virtual Networks, and hybrid cloud setups
- Expertise in cloud security using tools like Azure Security Center, NSGs, and Azure Firewall
- Strong system administration experience with Linux and Windows Server environments
- Proficiency with monitoring tools like Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, and Application Insights
- Experience managing backups and disaster recovery with Azure Backup.
- Ability to optimize cloud resource performance and costs using Azure Cost Management tools
- Clear, collaborative communication skills for working with diverse teams and stakeholders
- Problem-solving mindset with a proactive approach to incident resolution and system improvement
- Ability to work successfully within a professional services environment (e.g., can communicate effectively with clients)
- Passionate about creating better public outcomes through great government services
- A mindset and work approach that aligns with our core values
- Ability to travel for work from time to time
Nice-to-have qualifications
- Microsoft certified: Azure Administrator Associate or Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Experience supporting large-scale federal systems or cloud-based records management projects
- Familiarity with compliance standards like FedRAMP and NIST 800-53
- Experience working in multi-cloud or hybrid environments
- Active federal public trust (tier 2) or higher clearance
- Prior experience working in the civic tech space
- Experience working in a remote-team environment

- Ability to obtain and hold a federal public trust (tier 2).
- All work must be conducted within the U.S., excluding U.S. territories. Some federal contracts require U.S. citizenship to be eligible for employment.

- You may be required to complete a company background check successfully.

We want to give you the most competitive salary possible. After all, you deserve it! To that end, we use the results of our interview process to determine what salary is most appropriate given your current level of seniority. For a DevOps Engineer at Skylight, the current salary ranges are as follows:
- Associate DevOps Engineer: $90,000–$125,000
- DevOps Engineer I: $120,000–$140,000
- DevOps Engineer II: $135,000–$160,000
- Senior DevOps Engineer: $150,000–$185,000
- Staff DevOps Engineer: $170,000–$203,000
- Principal DevOps Engineer: $180,000–$230,000
