Founding Full-Stack | Backend Software Engineer

The Role
Piq Energy is looking for a talented and proactive full stack (backend) software engineer to join our foundational team. In this role, you will be responsible for developing, deploying, and maintaining the core backend services that power our platform. You’ll collaborate closely with the rest of the engineering team to scale our platform, improve performance, and introduce new features.
As an early hire, you’ll have the chance to shape the backend architecture and make critical decisions that directly influence the future of our product. This is a fast-paced startup environment where you’ll need to wear multiple hats, step in where needed, and quickly drive product advancements.
This is an critical early hire with a significant amount of responsibility and corresponding competitive (location-adjusted) salary and equity compensation. Expect a base of $150k—$200k and 0.25%—0.5% equity for SF-based employees.
Responsibilities
- Write clean, maintainable, and production-ready Python code.
- Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs, integrating with existing relational and graph databases, workflow orchestration tools, and cloud platforms.
- Optimize system performance and scalability to support our growing number of power grid simulations and customers.
- Design and develop systems for data management to support our power grid models and simulations.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify customer needs and translate them into technical requirements.
- Enhance deployment pipelines and backend infrastructure to ensure reliability and scalability.
- Deploy and integrate machine learning models into a production environment in a scalable and reliable manner.
- Show a bias towards action, quickly moving from concept to implementation and delivering impactful results.
- Propose and implement improvements to our software engineering practices.
Requirements
- Strong experience in backend development using Python.
- Experience with cloud services and familiarity with scalable backend systems.
- Familiarity with relational database design, management, and optimization.
- Knowledge of asynchronous workflows and task orchestration.
- Bonus: Experience working with graph databases.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, with a customer-focused mindset.
- Ability to work autonomously and manage time effectively in a fast-paced environment.
