Internship Program Overview  

We welcome a group of interns every summer into our three-month internship program, and you could be a part of it! This rewarding experience will fully integrate you into an existing or new project where your ideas, opinions, and assistance are valued.

Summer 2025 Start and End Date Options: May 20 – August 15, June 3 – August 29, and June 17 – September 12. No changes can be made to these dates. 

 

Research & Data Insights Overview 

RMI is committed to data-driven decision-making and deep sector research to inform sustainable energy strategies. The Research & Data Insights focus area combines technical data analysis with in-depth industry research to uncover trends, assess emerging technologies, and evaluate the impact of climate and energy policies. Interns in this focus area will leverage quantitative and qualitative research methods to analyze market trends, model energy systems, and support RMI’s thought leadership in the clean energy space. Through this work, they will contribute to shaping innovative solutions that drive the global transition to a carbon-free future.

Resume (Required) 

We suggest a 1–2-page resume that includes information about your academic background and work experience. Feel free to add additional sections that highlight any leadership roles you’ve held, relevant coursework, academic projects that you’ve completed, conference presentations, or any articles that have been published. 

 

Cover Letter (Required) 

Please submit a cover letter with the following questions answered in the attachment section where the resume is uploaded.  

  • How do you believe data and research can drive impactful solutions in the clean energy transition? 

  • What personal experiences or values have inspired your interest in clean energy and sustainability? 

  • RMI has multiple teams focused on data analysis and research. Which team(s) are you most interested in, and why? Please identify up to two programs and any projects/articles that are of interest. 

 

General Qualifications 

  • Currently enrolled in college preferably as a junior, senior, or master level graduate student. We also consider recent graduates as well. At this time, doctoral applicants are better suited for our Associate positions. 

  • Field of Study: Data Science, Statistics, Economics, Environmental Science, Engineering, Finance, Business Analytics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Architecture, or related fields. 

  • Exposure to energy systems, climate science, sustainability research, or market analysis 

  • Hands-on experience with data collection, statistical modeling, or forecasting 

  • Experience with case studies, industry research, or economic modeling related to clean energy 

  • Ability to synthesize complex information into clear reports or presentations 

  • Ability to clean, visualize, and interpret datasets for insights 

  • Curiosity and problem-solving ability to explore new research questions 

  • Analytical mindset with attention to detail 

  • Self-motivation and initiative to drive independent research projects 

  • You have the work authorization and legal right to work in the U.S. We are unable to sponsor visas for interns. 

 

Compensation 

Interns are paid $20.00/hr. and expected to work up to 40 hours per week.

We are a remote-ready organization with team members around the globe. Our beautiful and welcoming offices are available for meetings or focused work, whether you are traveling through or living nearby. Our U.S. offices are in New York City; Washington DC; Oakland, California; Boulder, Colorado; and Basalt, Colorado.
