Job Overview:
We’re a small and mighty startup, and we are hiring an experienced Senior Software Engineer with a strong foundation in both software development and team leadership to join our expanding technology team. As a Senior Software Engineer, you will play a crucial role in building and maintaining Beam’s core products and systems, as well as helping shape the future of the technology organization. We're looking for a backend-leaning engineer who's comfortable jumping into all layers of the stack when needed—shipping features, improving infrastructure, and collaborating cross-functionally to solve real-world problems.
You’ll own major product initiatives, drive architectural decisions, and help build a healthy and inclusive engineering culture. The ideal candidate brings strong technical skills alongside demonstrated experience coaching others, leading cross-functional projects, and contributing to team development. As our team grows, you’ll be well-positioned to guide and influence that growth.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the design, implementation, and delivery of complex product features and systems, with a leaning on backend engineering but with the ability to jump into any part of the stack as needed
- Act as a technical lead on projects, helping guide scope, sequencing, and delivery
- Collaborate cross-functionally with product, design, and other engineering teams
- Build our products out further by improving the performance of our codebase and handling scaling issues, applying standard coding patterns to accommodate user growth, as well as writing rigorous and thorough tests to ensure code stability
- Provide technical mentorship and coaching to engineers of varying experience levels
- Digest and distill technical problems and propose and execute creative technical solutions
- Review code, identify technical priorities, and system design trade-offs
- Build for scale, availability, performance, and security across the stack
What We’re Looking For
- 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with at least 2-3 years in a tech lead or engineering management role
- Track record of building scalable web applications with Node.js, NestJS, Express, React, and GraphQL
- Strong understanding of cloud platforms, ideally GCP, and modern CI/CD pipelines
- Combine strong technical depth with an ability to see the big picture and drive alignment
- Thrive in ambiguous environments and enjoy taking initiative
- Experience with API development and treating APIs as a product, ensuring usability, scalability, and reliability
- Ability to use efficient coding patterns and standards to create maintainable and scalable solutions
Tech Stack & Tools
We use modern, well-supported tools and frameworks that help us move quickly and build with confidence. Our current stack includes:
- Frontend: React, Next.js, TypeScript
- Backend: Node.js, Nest.js, GraphQL, TypeScript, Express, GRPC
- Database: PostgreSQL, ElasticSearch
- Infrastructure: GCP, Docker, Terraform, GitHub Actions
- Monitoring & Observability: Grafana, Sentry
- Internal Tooling & Productivity: Storybook, Figma, Slack, Linear
We don’t expect you to know everything on day one—curiosity and a willingness to learn go a long way. That said, we are looking for someone with deep familiarity with the core of our current tech stack.
*Don't hesitate to apply even if you don't meet every qualification, as we individually evaluate all applications and do consider candidates with outside experience.
