The News Literacy Project · Remote
Who we are
The News Literacy Project, founded in 2008, is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization building a national movement to ensure that all students are guaranteed to be skilled in news literacy before high school graduation, giving them the knowledge and ability to participate in civic society as well-informed, critical thinkers. NLP is the country’s leading provider of news literacy education and works with districts and educators in all 50 states, primarily through our signature e-learning platform, Checkology®, and weekly educator newsletter, The Sift®. Where you fit in
The News Literacy Project empowers educators to teach middle and high school students how to sort fact from fiction in the digital age. We are at an exciting inflection point for our work, and we are making critical investments to rapidly scale our growth and impact. We’re looking for a product manager to partner with staff and customers to identify meaningful problems and lead the development of solutions.
This is a high-impact role with direct ownership over discovery, delivery, and evolution of NLP’s core educator platform. You’ll report to and work closely with the VP of Product, and you will lead a cross-functional squad across product design, research, and in-house and offshore engineering.
About the position
You will have direct responsibility for a fast-growing education platform that delivers classroom-ready content, grading tools and resources to K-12 educators. You will ensure that what we build is aligned with both educator and student needs and our ability to scale our impact nationwide. Your decisions will have direct impact on our strategic goal of ensuring 3.5 million students receive news literacy instruction from NLP by 2028.
Specifically, in this job, you will:
- Drive the full product lifecycle of medium-to-large product initiatives, such as end-to-end class management, or improving the educator and student experience within lesson delivery
- Contribute to roadmap planning and own end-to-end execution of scoped initiatives
- Translate educator and student needs into clear, outcome-driven product decisions
- Partner with design and research to deeply understand user behavior and pain points
- Write detailed PRDs and user stories, grounded in real user needs and business impact
- Prioritize bugs, features, and tech debt in tight coordination with engineering
- Define and track success metrics for post-launch performance and user adoption
- Solicit and synthesize feedback from educators, internal teams, and leadership to inform decisions
- Drive sprint rituals, with coaching as needed – this is not a product owner role
This full-time position is virtual. Highly qualified candidates who live in, and are authorized to work in, the United States are encouraged to apply.
About you
You’re a thoughtful product manager with a strong bias to action. You’re a great communicator and are at ease with customers and executives. You’ve shipped features, worked directly with users, and partnered across teams to solve meaningful problems. You’re looking for a mission-driven team where you can grow your impact and your skills and simply do important work.
- You can quickly apply your skills and experiences to new domains and industries
- You can turn feedback and research into clear product direction
- You communicate clearly, early and often with all stakeholders
- You are energized by solving problems that can make a difference in our country
- You thrive in cross-functional teams, move fast and bring others with you without sacrificing thoughtfulness
- You can work independently in a remote-first environment
Qualifications
- 3+ years in a product management role, or equivalent experience driving feature development with cross-functional teams; bonus for K-12 education experience
- Experienced in leading multiple end-to-end product initiatives from discovery through delivery and iteration, with measurable user or business impact
- Authored detailed PRDs or specs that guided engineering and design execution
- Created and delivered customer- and executive-facing presentations and reports, including your own data analysis (using SQL, or Sigma or other BI tools)
- Defined product scope, success metrics, and timelines while considering technical tradeoffs with engineering
- Commissioned, planned or facilitated user interviews or research sessions, in partnership with UX or autonomously when needed
- Confident navigating ambiguity and leading projects from scratch, with guidance and mentorship available
Compensation and benefits
The salary for this position is $80,000 to $85,000, depending on the candidate’s qualifications and experience. NLP also offers outstanding benefits, including a potential annual bonus of up to 10% for exceptional performance, health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan match, flexible work environment and more.
