Purpose of Position

EdReports is seeking a UX Designer to shape the experience of our website, reports, internal tools, and marketing materials, ensuring that our users can access information that is clear, usable, and inclusive. In this role, you will lead design and prototyping, partner on user research, and implement designs to maintain accessibility and high-quality user interactions. You will collaborate closely with engineers, product and project managers, and internal stakeholders across the organization to deliver impactful, user-centered solutions.

Key Responsibilities & Outcomes

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and iterate user-centered website features and UI components that improve usability, accessibility, relevance, and clarity of information.
  • Participate in product discovery by creating wireframes and prototypes, and by conducting user research (interviews, usability testing, surveys) in partnership with the product manager.
  • Collaborate with engineers, product managers, project managers, subject-matter experts, and other internal stakeholders to ensure designs are feasible and aligned with organizational goals.
  • Deliver high-fidelity design assets for use on the website and collaborate with engineers in the implementation of the design.
  • Champion accessibility and inclusive design, ensuring compliance with WCAG standards and best practices.
  • Support testing and quality assurance to confirm that designs are implemented accurately, mobile-friendly, and accessible.
  • Use analytics, data, and user feedback to continuously evaluate and refine the website experience.
  • Support the design of effective marketing artifacts including funder-facing materials.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned to support the organization's strategic goals, with the expectation that all EdReports employees remain flexible and adaptable to evolving responsibilities.

Outcomes:

First 30 days

  • Gain a strong understanding of EdReports’ mission, vision, and values, and how the website supports this work.
  • Learn the current website architecture, design system, and accessibility standards in place.
  • Build relationships with the website product team and other key stakeholders.
  • Review existing user research, analytics, and feedback to develop an initial understanding of user needs.

First 60 days

  • Begin contributing to product discovery efforts by creating wireframes and prototypes for upcoming features.
  • Participate in user research sessions with the product manager and start synthesizing findings into design recommendations.
  • Deliver initial design concepts for review and feedback from the product team and stakeholders.

 

First 90 days

  • Take ownership of design tasks from discovery through delivery, collaborating with engineers to ensure implementation accuracy.
  • Facilitate a design workshop or collaborative session with stakeholders to align on a feature or website improvement.
  • Validate design decisions through usability testing or other user feedback mechanisms.
  • Receive positive feedback from product and design partners on collaboration and technical leadership.

First 6 months

  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of EdReport’s product (reports) by taking ownership of a feature design through the entire lifecycle, from participation in product team discovery through release, including testing and documentation.

Travel

National travel will occur related to organizational needs and for professional learning, as needed. The amount of travel will be monitored to ensure it is appropriate for both the organization and the Lead, UX Designer.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Passion for EdReports’ mission and vision, our core values, and our commitment to Diversity, Belonging, Inclusion, and Equity.
  • At least 5 years of experience in UX/UI website design.
  • Proven ability to create prototypes, wireframes, and mockups.
  • Experience applying user research methods (e.g., usability testing, user interviews, surveys) and translating findings into actionable design decisions.
  • Familiarity with UI/UX best practices, including responsive and interaction design.
  • Strong understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG) and ability to design inclusive digital experiences.
  • Experience optimizing designs for different devices and screen sizes, including mobile.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with experience working in cross-functional teams and presenting design rationale to stakeholders.

Preferred:

  • Familiarity with HTML/CSS and experience partnering effectively with engineers.
  • Proficiency with Figma or other collaborative design and prototyping tools.
  • Experience designing interfaces that communicate complex information clearly and effectively.
  • Background in nonprofit or education sectors, particularly in technology-driven equity initiatives.
  • Experience in a startup or fast-paced environment, demonstrating resourcefulness and innovation.

Salary

The salary for this position is $99,443 - $134,540 annually. At EdReports, we determine final salaries based on the role's requirements and the candidate's experience and skills, while maintaining equity within our compensation bands. To support fairness and provide opportunities for growth, we typically offer salaries at or below the midpoint of the range. All salary offers are non-negotiable to ensure consistency and equity across the organization.

Physical Requirements  

Work is normally performed in a remote office environment including, but not limited to standing and sitting for long periods of time; and fine-finger and hand manipulation to operate a computer and keyboard. Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing electronic information, transcribing, viewing a computer terminal, and extensive reading. This person will travel by car, air, or other transportation (as indicated in the Travel section) and should be able to physically withstand the demands of such travel. Employee may be required to walk for long distances at retreat venues or other relevant sites.
