Compensation: $65,000 - $70,000 + Comprehensive City Benefits (health, retirement, paid leave, etc.)
The City of St. Louis is seeking a Research Analyst to primarily support the Recovery Office. This role builds the data pipelines, dashboards, and metrics that track progress on debris & infrastructure, community planning & development, business & non-profit recovery, housing, and resident well-being efforts related to the May 16th tornado recovery efforts. You’ll translate complex data into clear, actionable insights so leaders can understand performance, spot opportunities, and move quickly on what matters.
Position Vision
We’re looking for a sharp, detail-oriented analyst who excels at working with multi-source data and can create illustrative data products that produce actionable insights. You will bring strong SQL and data-visualization skills (Tableau preferred), comfort working across departments, and the discipline to document and improve processes producing faster, cleaner, and more repeatable analytics products over time.
Core Responsibilities
The Research Analyst designs and maintains recovery-focused dashboards and datasets, integrates quantitative and qualitative sources, and communicates findings to executive and frontline stakeholders. You’ll collaborate with program staff to understand objectives and constraints, recommend metrics, and build tools that guide resource allocation and program implementation.
- Design, publish, and maintain Tableau dashboards that highlight key recovery metrics and trends.
- Query, clean, analyze, and model large datasets using SQL; build reliable, documented datasets for analysis and reporting.
- Translate findings into concise visuals and narratives for executives, program managers, and partners.
- Prepare reports and presentations that clearly connect insights to decisions and next actions.
- Develop and document repeatable data pipelines and standard visualization practices.
- Work with stakeholders to understand and document business processes that inform analysis and metrics.
- Evaluate policies, processes, and data workflows for efficiency and quality; recommend improvements.
- Identify trends and produce forecasts that inform planning and program delivery.
- Use statistical, economic, and data-modeling techniques and tools where appropriate.
- Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the role.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in economics, finance, statistics, computer science, or a related field.
- 2–3 years in a data analytics role with hands-on SQL and data-visualization experience.
- Strong SQL skills; experience manipulating large, complex datasets.
- Proficiency with Tableau (or similar BI tools) and solid data-storytelling capabilities.
- Advanced Excel or Google Sheets; familiarity with data-modeling concepts.
- Clear, concise writing and presentation abilities with careful grammar and proofreading.
- Analytical, detail-oriented, collaborative; sound judgment and intellectual curiosity.
- Ability to present information and respond to questions from managers, partners, and the public.
- Proven ability to turn complex data into understandable reports and dashboards.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills.
- Bonus: Experience with R, Python, GIS, or Snowflake.
- Physical Requirements: Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk; must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
