About Open Supply Hub

Open Supply Hub, a US-based global nonprofit, is powering the transition to safe and sustainable supply chains through open data. With our users, we’ve mapped millions of production locations around the world, showing where global production is happening and who is connected to each location. We make that data easy for anyone to work with, opening the door to new solutions, targeted investment, and more effective collaborations. Our vision is to transform supply chain ecosystems for the 100+ million people working in them by mapping 40-million sites globally.

We are a small but agile team empowered to make decisions. We celebrate achievements while providing an environment for mistakes, learning and growth. Our focus on openness and accessibility in our external work and partners starts from how we work together within our team.

About the role

OS Hub is seeking an experienced and visionary Sr./Lead Engineer to serve as a catalyst for implementing the next product offerings that OS Hub will bring to the market. This role will collaborate with leadership to define and implement the technical strategy, system architecture, and engineering practices that enable OS Hub's open data platform to scale and deliver high-value solutions for supply chain transparency globally. This role must excel at both strategic technical design and hands-on engineering, bringing to life the organizational mission, product needs, infrastructure capabilities, and business objectives.

Though our organization is remote, this position must reside in the United States and be eligible to work in the United States. As a globally distributed team, we coordinate meetings and collaborative work during the overlap hours of 8:00 and 18:00 UTC to ensure effective interaction with team members and customers across time zones while maintaining flexible work schedules.

The Sr./Lead Engineer reports to the Chief Technology Officer, works closely with and will serve as a hands-on mentor to the Data team (including the Data Community Lead and three Data Associates) and collaborates with the outsourced engineering team. This role offers significant growth potential, with the opportunity to evolve into our senior-most technical leadership position as the organization scales.

What you’ll do

Technical Management & Oversight

  • Team Leadership: Coach and upskill the existing data engineering team on general software design and development, AWS, and ML technologies. We view this individual as growing into the manager of this team and the out-sourced (contracted) product engineering team.
  • Technical Decision-Making: Evaluate technology choices, architectural trade-offs, and infrastructure investments that balance innovation, stability, and resource constraints

System Architecture & Core Engineering

  • Architectural Design & Evolution: Lead the design of scalable, maintainable, and secure system architectures, managing the evolution of OS Hub's AWS infrastructure from legacy systems to modern, cloud-based patterns that support growing data volumes and diverse user workloads
  • Hands-On Core Development: Contribute directly to the codebase by building core components and tackling the team's most complex technical challenges across the stack—from database optimization and API design to data pipeline architecture. This will include: Integrating AI into our data mapping and ingestion processes; designing and building a data subscription product offering that can be sold to enterprises across the globe; and streamlining our AWS footprint to enable the organization to scale.
  • Engineering Excellence & Operations: Establish and monitor key performance indicators and service level agreements to ensure high availability and cost optimization; define and enforce coding standards, documentation practices, and rigorous testing protocols; lead the development of automation frameworks and CI/CD pipelines to streamline deployment and modernize development workflows
  • Rapid Prototyping & Problem-Solving: Personally prototype solutions for complex technical challenges, validate architectural approaches, and unblock engineering work when specialized expertise is required

Product-Engineering Alignment

  • Technical Product Strategy: Shape product vision and roadmap based on technical feasibility, infrastructure capabilities, and engineering effort, ensuring realistic scoping and sustainable development velocity
  • Business & Grant Alignment: Evaluate technical feasibility of funding opportunities, contribute to proposal development with accurate technical scoping, and ensure engineering priorities align with grant objectives and organizational goals

What you bring

Note: Diverse candidates often self eliminate. We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification.

  • Experience in software engineering, including at least 3 years in a technical leadership role guiding teams and shaping system architecture:
    • Senior Engineer level: typically 5-8 years of software engineering experience
    • Lead Engineer level: typically 8+ years of software engineering experience
    • (Final level determination will be based on overall experience, & technical assessment as described below in salary section)
  • Technical degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, or equivalent
  • Proven track record designing and implementing scalable, cloud-based systems (preferably AWS), with demonstrated success managing complex technical projects from conception through deployment
  • Experience implementing AI models in production cloud / web applications
  • Strong hands-on engineering skills: writing efficient and effective code, debug complex issues, and build core platform components across the full stack
  • Exceptional ability to lead, mentor, and foster cross-functional collaboration in a small, fast-paced, remote-first organization

It’s a bonus if you also have

  • Background working with data-intensive platforms, API design, or systems serving diverse user communities at scale
  • Exceptional ability to communicate technical concepts to non-technical audiences including executives, board members, and external funders
  • Experience establishing DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and engineering standards in growing organizations
  • Strong understanding of and commitment to open data principles and mission-driven technology in a global context
  • Experience making strategic technology decisions while balancing multiple priorities and organizational constraints in a resource-constrained, mission-driven environment
