Position Description

BKCM is seeking a strategic-minded Salesforce platform expert, with particular skill in interpersonal communication and relationship-building, to steward Salesforce as a core internal system supporting and empowering the organization’s present and future. You'll partner with stakeholders to understand their needs, synthesize those into a coherent roadmap, collaborate with internal and external teams to deliver continuous improvements, and empower staff to thrive with the system.

Unlike CRM roles where you inherit technical debt and frustrated users, you're joining an organization with a fresh, current system and strong existing adoption that is already accelerating BKCM's growth and impact. Your mission isn't fighting fires — it's unlocking the potential of technology to bring even more of BKCM’s staff into Salesforce to manage music programming, events, family and faculty participation, and more.

You’ll also receive significant guidance and mentorship in the role from our advisors at The Build Tank as you ramp up responsibilities, as described in this resource: https://thebuildtank.com/resourcing-product-team-white-paper

Candidate Profile

This position may be a great fit for you if:

  • You love Salesforce and get excited about what's possible with the platform
  • You're a natural relationship builder who thrives on collaboration and communication
  • You're energized by talking with people to understand their work as much as (or more than) building and customizing technology
  • You’re able to thrive in a fast-paced and complex environment where you are constantly intaking, synthesizing, and routing incoming information into organized systems and processes.
  • You're driven by the mission of making your colleagues' work easier and more impactful

It may not be a great fit for you if:

  • You prefer heads-down technical work over human interaction
  • You'd rather work through a ticket queue than proactively engage with users
  • You want someone else to handle training, support, and relationship building
  • You’re uncomfortable with a highly iterative style of work, or you prefer to take one project at a time through to completion

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Platform Leadership

  • Steward the continuous evolution of BKCM’s Salesforce platform and its related tools — viewing it as a living product that never stops improving.
  • Seek out and gather the evolving needs of the organization concerning the CRM, and synthesize these needs into an ever-evolving product roadmap.
  • Continually prioritize fixes and improvements to strategically meet the variety of needs required for high-quality organizational function.
  • Engage appropriate external experts and actively manage those relationships to maintain a healthy, productive functional improvement cycle.
  • Support CRM users to learn and use the system effectively, and to maintain a high level of data integrity.
  • Foster a culture of partnership where technology serves people's work, building trust and enthusiasm for the CRM across the organization.
  • Engage in consistent communication with staff and executive leaders to understand priorities and effectively communicate key choices and team capabilities.
  • Prioritize resolution of any bugs or hiccups with urgency to avoid disruptions to regular business and platform usage.
  • Partner with executive leadership to actively maintain a CRM strategy that supports the goals of the organization.

Database Administration

  • When appropriate, implement or oversee under-the-hood configurations in Salesforce, such as configuration, workflow automation, technical adjustments, and other improvements appropriate to be handled in-house.
  • Develop reports and dashboards that answer key business intelligence questions, support funder reporting, or other strategic decision making at the organization.
  • Implement or oversee data integrity audits and cleanups, data imports and exports, and, where appropriate, data migrations.
  • Carry out or oversee quality assurance testing.
  • Manage or implement research on third-party integrated tools and develop relevant expertise to maintain them.
  • Drive and oversee the migration of any and all data currently residing in legacy systems and spreadsheets.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A strong interest in BKCM’s mission and a desire to be part of the team that supports our work.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Consistent desire to solve problems and make the lives of fellow team members easier.
  • 3+ years of Salesforce architecture and administration experience.
  • Experience with Salesforce in a nonprofit organizational environment, including managing an instance built on Salesforce’s Nonprofit Success Pack (NPSP).
  • Knowledge of integrated Salesforce tools such as email marketing platforms, donation processor platforms, and other common integrations.
  • Comfort using tools for shared task management and establishing strong processes for tracking work among team members and stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide helpful instruction to audiences of varying technical ability.
  • Focus on making it work – open-minded, willing to look at problems from multiple angles, with an appetite and patience for getting it right by iterating on systems/processes and continuously improving.
  • Demonstrated curiosity, empathy, integrity, and sense of humor.
