Data Analyst
Redistricting Data Hub · Remote (US)
Responsibilities
The Redistricting Data Hub (RDH) is an essential source of high quality redistricting data and support for working with the data. You will become familiar with the nuances of working with geospatial data, election results, and other key datasets. The datasets you produce will be used by RDH stakeholders and many will be incorporated directly into DRA. Responsibilities include:
- Collecting and collating data from various sources including but not limited to: the US Census Bureau, voter file vendor data, Secretary of State's Offices, and other state and local governments to produce statewide datasets on election results and demographic variables.
- Creating and enhancing extant python workflows to engineer said data. These data exist as both large tabular and geospatial datasets. Frequently working in jupyter notebooks for transparency and legibility to external audiences
- Supporting other team members to provide census, voter file, or custom datasets on an ad hoc basis
- Working with the DRA team to streamline their existing Python/JavaScript data ingestion pipeline.
Depending on aptitude and interest, there may be opportunities to produce data visualizations for RDH and/or DRA. If that does not interest you, that will not reflect negatively on your application. Data visualization responsibilities could include:
- Creating data visualizations to highlight the use and functionality of RDH created datasets for the website as well as in RDH-created reports on demographic changes and redistricting outcomes, among other relevant topics.
- Designing new Plotly data visualizations for DRA Stats and Analytics views as well as exploring ways to enable users to customize how data is visualized

About Redistricting Data Hub
Redistricting and Why It Matters
Redistricting is the process of redrawing political district boundaries. It usually occurs every 10 years, after the US Census. The 2021 cycle, however, has stretched into the mid-decade period, with redraws, litigation, and reform efforts ongoing in many states. How district boundaries are drawn has a huge effect on who can get elected. Effective participation and having influence in the redistricting process—analyzing the racial or political effect of maps; creating and submitting federal and state law compliant district plans—requires technical sophistication, expensive software, and a lot of data. In the past, these barriers to entry have proved insurmountable for most, allowing a small set of well-funded, well-connected individuals to manipulate redistricting in states across America. The RDH and DRA are two nonpartisan nonprofit projects working together to break down those barriers.
What is the Redistricting Data Hub (RDH)
The Redistricting Data Hub provides individuals, good government organizations, and community groups the data, resources, and knowledge to participate effectively in the redistricting process. In service of this mission, we host thousands of datasets in all 50 states, and continue to add new data that is useful for map drawing and analysis. This data is free to the public, and accompanied by technical support and nonpartisan analysis on request. For more information, visit redistrictingdatahub.org.
What is Dave’s Redistricting App (DRA)
Dave’s Redistricting App (DRA) is a free, nonpartisan web app in which you can create, view, analyze and share redistricting maps for all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. DRA has a rich feature set, significant analytics, and extensive census and election data. It's been used by tens of thousands of people, including community groups and court-appointed special masters. For more information, visit davesredistricting.org.
The Partnership Between RDH and DRA
The RDH works with DRA to provide support for the maintenance and improvement of the app’s data and analytics. Our team ensures key redistricting datasets are made publicly available for use in the mapping tool. We also provide public trainings and demonstrations of features in DRA, and other forms of ad hoc support.
