We're looking for a User Insights and Analytics Manager to help us to build exceptional digital products. You'll help us understand how people use iNaturalist, and how we can improve the platform, based on data and evidence.

The ideal candidate has experience in both quantitative and qualitative research, a feel for community-driven platforms, comfort working alongside engineers and designers, and strong communication and facilitation skills. This role reports to our Head of Product and Engineering and works closely with our Product Designer.

Responsibilities

  • User Understanding & Strategy:

    • Own and understand our platform analytics and user statistics, monitoring for pain-points in user flows, especially related to user acquisition/retention and quality of iNat data, existing user segmentation frameworks.

    • Conduct and/or oversee user research (interviews, surveys, usability testing, field studies) to deeply understand user needs, pain points, and behaviors.

    • Develop research reports, journey maps, and other artifacts to evangelize user needs across the organization.

    • Draw user and audience insights from external sources (e.g. peer-reviewed literature, other reports) from projects that use iNaturalist.

    • Serve as a voice of the user to advocate for quality experiences across our products.

    • Work with the Head of Product and Product Designer to ensure that our product vision, strategy, and roadmap are aligned with overall organizational goals.

  • Product Development & Execution:

    • Translate user insights into clear product requirements.

    • Collaborate with the Product team to prioritize features and backlog items based on user impact, mission/business value, and strategic alignment.

    • Monitor & analyze how feature delivery is helping us achieve goals in user acquisition, retention, and maintaining data quality in our platform.

    • Provide weekly updates on user feedback, product usage data, analytics, and usability testing to product and engineering teams.

    • Collaborate closely with Product Manager, Product Designer, Engineering, and Engagement teams to deliver high-quality products.

    • Work closely with the Product Manager, Product Designer and Head of Product and Engineering to manage the product lifecycle from concept to launch and iteration, including defining success metrics and monitoring performance.

  • Data & Experimentation:

    • Use analytics data, and experimentation to validate hypotheses and optimize product experiences. Help us build A/B testing practices.

    • Support thoughtful design and understanding of our market through competitive analysis and other desk research.

    • Assist with testing and QA on feature releases, identifying bugs and issues before wider release.

    • Collaborate with the Engagement team to better understand and build trust with the iNaturalist Community, coordinating on user surveys and email communications, keeping a pulse on our community to better serve our users.

Qualifications

  • Strong analytical skills to derive actionable insights from research and data. 

  • Proven experience as a User Researcher, Analytics Manager or similar role, with a strong focus on people-centric design, proven through 4-6 years of experience in a related role. 

  • Experience analyzing quantitative analytics from platforms like Google Analytics, App Store/Google Play, and internal systems.

  • Proficiency in various user research methodologies (qualitative & quantitative) and tools such as UserTesting.com.

  • Deep empathy for users and a passion for building intuitive, valuable products.

  • Strong project management skills, with experience in agile methodologies and a track record of delivering projects on time and within scope.

  • Outstanding written and verbal communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across departments and with diverse stakeholders on a fully remote team with different communication styles. Track record of working “in the weeds” alongside engineers, designers, and engagement or marketing teams. 

  • Bachelor's degree with strong coursework in statistics, data analytics, or other methods preferred.

  • Bonuses:

Competitive pay.

The salary for this full-time position is $129,471.77 per year, non-negotiable.

There is a 401k plan with a 5% match. This position is eligible for unlimited personal time off, and unlike some tech companies, we really mean it – everyone is expected to take a minimum of three weeks a year off. Eligible new parents get up to 12 weeks of paid leave and an additional 18 of unpaid.
