The Role
As Head of Engineering, you will lead and evolve how engineering works at Peek, ensuring we build scalable, reliable, and impactful technology that advances access to eye care globally. You will operate at the intersection of product, design, and engineering — partnering closely with product leadership to ensure we are building the right solutions, in the right way.
You will lead a growing engineering team of 7, expanding to around 10 by the end of 2026, working across four squads. The team currently includes full-stack software engineers, DevOps engineers, and a data engineer, with close collaboration across Product, Design, QA, and Data Science. You will report to the Head of Product and Services, a member of Peek’s Senior Leadership Team, and act as the senior engineering partner within the Product & Technology function. As the role develops, there is scope to establish technical leadership within squads and take broader ownership of engineering quality, including line management of the QA Lead and overall leadership of the QA team.
You will be responsible for the overall health of our engineering system: from architecture and technical quality, to developer experience, delivery effectiveness, and team capability. In a small, remote-first, highly collaborative organisation, you will act as both a strategic leader and a hands-on technical guide—shaping direction whilst allowing teams to deliver independently. You are comfortable engaging directly with code when needed—through reviews, pairing, or prototyping—while recognising your primary impact comes from enabling the team rather than being a primary contributor.
As part of the Product & Technology leadership group — alongside the Product Management Lead, Product Design Lead, and QA Lead, and reporting to the Head of Product and Services — you will:
- Define and evolve the technical direction of our platform, ensuring it remains scalable, secure, and fit for purpose across diverse global contexts.
- Partner to design and continuously improve how engineering, product, and design collaborate — including decision-making, trade-offs, and shared ownership across the product lifecycle —translating strategic priorities into coherent, achievable technical plans.
- Lead and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team (Software, DevOps, and Data Engineering), taking clear ownership of team health, individual growth, performance, and organisational effectiveness so the team can do high-quality, sustainable work.
- Scale the engineering function by defining role profiles, career pathways and hiring plans aligned to our roadmap, while building a strong recruitment approach that supports long-term team effectiveness and growth.
- Improve how we build and deliver software by strengthening engineering practices, tooling, and developer experience — including by shaping how we use emerging AI-assisted engineering practices and tooling.
- Ensure strong ownership and clarity within squads, enabling squads to deliver independently while maintaining alignment across the system.
- Balance delivery speed with long-term sustainability, making deliberate trade-offs around technical investment, quality, and reliability.
- Oversee the reliability and performance of our systems, supporting global deployments in complex and resource-constrained environments.
Core Experience & Capabilities:
- Motivated by Peek’s mission and energised by building technology that delivers meaningful real-world impact in diverse and resource-constrained environments.
- Proven experience leading engineering teams in a product-led environment, ideally within a small to mid-sized organisation (with approx. 10-50 engineers).
- Strong technical background with the ability to guide architecture and engage across backend, frontend, DevOps, and data systems.
- Experience establishing and evolving engineering practices (e.g. CI/CD, testing, observability, infrastructure-as-code).
- Demonstrated ability to balance delivery speed with long-term system health through pragmatic trade-offs.
- Track record of building and developing high-performing teams, fostering ownership, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Strong product mindset, with experience partnering closely with product and design to solve meaningful user problems.
- Systems thinker, able to improve the end-to-end software delivery lifecycle, with experience operating and scaling production systems in real-world environments.
Bonus Skillset:
If you have any of the following skillsets it’s a bonus for this role:
- Experience building and supporting mobile or hybrid applications in diverse environments.
- Familiarity with tools and technologies used at Peek (e.g. Typescript, Angular, NestJS, MongoDB, AWS).
- Experience working with distributed teams across multiple geographies and time zones.
- Exposure to data platforms, analytics tooling, or experimentation (e.g. A/B testing, Apache Preset, Google Analytics).
What You’ll Experience at Peek:
- Purpose-driven work: Shape systems impacting millions annually.
- Ownership & autonomy: Operate in a culture that values self-management and accountability.
- Global collaboration: Work with a multidisciplinary team across the globe.
- Flexibility: Remote-first ethos with a supportive, mission-driven environment.
- Growth: Opportunities to shape your role in a rapidly scaling organization.
Your work at Peek will continue to shape systems and products that directly impact millions of lives annually.
About Peek
1.1 billion people live with avoidable or preventable vision loss. This number is set to grow to 1.8 billion by 2050. The vast majority (90%) need just a simple pair of glasses or cataract surgery. So why do so many not have access to these simple, life-changing solutions?
Across the world, eye health professionals work tirelessly. But they face huge challenges. Resources are scarce, specialists are in short supply, patients don’t arrive at appointments and outcomes can be hard to track. Many people with vision loss don’t know a solution exists or struggle to reach care. They remain invisible to health services.
Peek Vision is a social enterprise that works with NGOs and governments to bring vision and eye health to everyone. Our software and data intelligence platform strengthens health systems and optimises school, community and workplace eye health services. With Peek, eye health providers can identify gaps and inequalities in their services. People who would have been invisible to health workers or hard to reach are made visible, so that nobody is left behind.
By 2050, we aim to prevent 1.25 billion people from needlessly losing their eyesight.
We are dynamic, impact-driven and award-winning. Our products have been developed in collaboration with eye health providers, professional bodies and researchers. They reflect global best practices in health systems decision-making. We currently offer eye health providers:
Rapid assessments: Software and tools to help programme planners understand their populations’ eye health needs.
Peek-powered programmes: Software to implement, optimise and evaluate eye health services in schools and communities.
Peek is powering eye health programmes in multiple countries. Millions of people have their vision screened using Peek each year.
