Overview

Open Finance Consortium, the non-profit organisation behind https://opencollective.com, is looking for an experienced, energetic Executive Director to push the organisation into its next growth phase.

Open Collective (https://discover.opencollective.com/) is the fundraising and financial management platform supporting thousands of community projects, which have between them raised nearly US$200m. The platform supports independent collectives and foundations that extend their legal and financial status to member projects under a fiscal sponsorship agreement.

In 2024, our largest customer, Open Collective Foundation, closed down. In response, our second biggest customer, Open Source Collective, led a consortium of the platform’s biggest users to acquire the platform from its for-profit owner and maintain it as a non-profit organisation, underwriting the cost for two years. During that time, the team redeveloped the commercial product and governance transitioned to a representative, community-based assembly.

Now that the transition is complete, we are looking for a new Executive Director to lead our small team into its next phase of growth, operating in an increasingly competitive market while building on our strong position and the financial support of a committed core customer base.

Expectations

The Executive Director reports directly to the board and is expected to:

  • Lead the organisation into its next growth phase, backed by its biggest customers, who have committed a significant proportion of their revenues to support growth.
  • Raise funds, ideally from value-aligned philanthropic foundations and family offices, to complement existing revenues and support future feature development.
  • Externally represent and evangelise the platform and the work of its key customers.
  • Manage the non-profit organisation and the for-profit subsidiary business that maintains opencollective.com.
  • Work with the board and governing authority (our community-based assembly of customers and members) on strategy, risk, compliance, budgets and organisational sustainability, while supporting staff development and wellbeing.

Qualifications

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • Experience as an executive or senior manager responsible for a technology and/or non-profit business, with an in-house tech team and revenues of at least US$5m per year.
  • Experience working with and supporting a board of directors to make informed decisions and hold the organisation accountable.
  • Experience building and maintaining a commercial pipeline, and delivering sales at executive level.
  • Successful private, public or third-sector fundraising, and direct involvement in delivering the work funded.
  • A history of successful public engagement and/or policy work.
  • Successful management of organisational growth, including recruitment, culture-building and staff development.

Candidates would also benefit from:

  • Experience working across American and European markets.
  • Knowledge of the legal, financial and technical compliance requirements of running a US (Delaware)-based non-profit organisation and/or fintech company.
  • Experience with fintech platform businesses.
  • Experience with open-source/free-software development and maintenance.

Details

  • Contract: Fixed term, initially 60–80% of full-time equivalent (3-4 days a week)
  • Compensation: US$120,000-$150,000 per year depending on experience and time commitment. We’re open to discussing the balance between hours and pay.
  • Location: Remote, within 5 hours of GMT.
  • Reports to: Board of Directors.

Applying

Candidates should send an appropriately detailed CV (no more than two pages, not a LinkedIn profile) including two personal and/or professional references, and a short message introducing themselves (audio, video or email) to [email protected].

Messages from recruiters, head hunters and personal introductions from third parties will not be considered nor responded to.
